Cheap sunglasses

Yesterday in the last 15 miles of the Nyack ride, somebody dropped their Oakleys, which shattered beneath the pace line wheels. Well, not Oakleys, but cheap sunglasses, like the $50 Tifosi shades I wear. I pull up next to the guy who dropped them and asked if he was going back for them. This dude Dario says 'Nah, that's why I buy cheap glasses, those cost me $25'.

We shared a fist bump @ 25mph. It was EXCELLENT.

I have a few pair of the Tifosi Slip. They ROCK.

The ones I'm wearing here are $15 from Sheetz's convenience store/gas station:

Hideous, but polarized and block UV A & B--good enough.

I like the 'Joe's Bike Shop' logo on the jersey more.

So does Joe.

We have a local bike shop here called 'Joe Fix Its'. They sell high end bikes.

The poignant irony of that name was made clear to me when a Dura Ace chain they had installed came apart 8 miles into the first ride. Needless to say I get my bike repairs done elsewhere. Now you know why my 'local' bike shop is Piermont Bicycle Connection, 40 miles from here.

Joe's Bike Shop is in an area called Mt. Washington on the west side of Baltimore. Unfortunately, I live on the east side of Baltimore, so usually, it's not worth it to me to go all of the way over there for 10% off of goods and 5% of repairs. I can get 10% from Performance and I can do all of my repairs myself, except for the most major of ones dealing with wheel rebuilding or headset work.

+1 - I'm in the market for a new cheapo pair as well as I've gone through yet another pair. After buying expensive Brikos many years ago (great sunglasses, but no difference between, $150 vs. $15 I paid for the last ones).

I'd actually rather have a bunch of crappy ones for riding and put my money on some nice ones for wearing out / driving / etc. vs the scratched, gummed up and bounced off your helmet crappers for cycling.

Any PBK brand sunglasses are a good deal. I have a couple of pair. Twenty some odd dollars with a full set of lenses and case. Also have a pair of $30ish Bolle's from Nashbar which are my favorite. No need to spend money for M frames. I actually get M frames for free at work and don't like them. The lenses are too big for me.

tifosi makes some real nice sunglasses for the price point. that being said, i dont seem to have issues with misplacing my shades or breaking them. later.

Jarery 08-11-08 07:08 AM

Tifosi Pave, have several of them.

2manybikes 08-11-08 07:32 AM

^ Where do I get those?

robvas 08-11-08 08:07 AM

A friend of mine gave me a couple pairs of cool safety glasses from his work. They're polarized and sporty looking, and free

CaboWabo 08-11-08 08:15 AM

That's why I have a pair of Oakley Xmetal Juliets...even if they get ran over they'll be a ok :).

patentcad 08-11-08 08:17 AM

Now that's what I call a Peloton Dog.

I get my eye wear from Lowes or Home Depot. For $20, their safety glasses work fine ... and are shatter resistant. I have a pair of clear lenses for gray days, and a pair with tinted lenses for sunny days. They actually have some pretty good looking styles too ... and at twenty bucks, they're disposable.:D

Joe's is one of two or maybe three competent shops in this town. A few weeks ago I called around to have a crown race milled down form JIS to ISO. Of the first three places I called, two had no idea what I was talking about and one offered to send it out to be done. The mechanic at Joe's just told me to bring it in.

I've had perscription sun glasses made before so I could read the HRM and odometer and still see down the road. This spring I picked up a pair of wrap around sunglasses for $15 in a Gander Mountain Store, that were made for fishermen. They have little square inserts on the lenses, for vision correction, that help me see the displays or make bike repairs and still let me look pretty cool from distances greater that 5 feet (inside of 5' I probably look more look fredish with the 1/2" squares on the lenses).

Yes, they do! Less fog, no glare, interchangeable lenses, no slipping down my big slopey nose, stylish, inexpensive-ish, what's not to love?

logdrum 08-11-08 09:48 AM

PCAD you paid too much in back taxes or what? Looking for bargains or saving $ for cycling is not typical of you. I thought you had a stash of Maui Jims, Revos and Oakleys lying all over your office and car.

As long as it is polarized. A must here in the high desert. Are those Tifosi's polarized. If not the Big Five Sports store has been selling polarized Bolle's for a year noe. 30 bucks ain't that bad. I do use Maui Jims but have 2-3 Bolle's lying around.

daytonian 08-11-08 10:10 AM

tifosi dolomites FTW

patentcad 08-11-08 10:21 AM

If you never dropped your glasses in a ride or race you're not riding hard enough.
