Motorist/Cyclist Incident from 8/10/08

Notices
Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

Motorist/Cyclist Incident from 8/10/08

This is from a post I wrote on an automotive board that I belong to. I thought I'd share for you all.

Hi all

I thought I'd share a story of something myself and a group of fellow cyclists saw yesterday. I'd like to preface by saying that as someone who was into modded cars for several years and an avid cyclist I understand the tension between the two. However, this situation was too ironic.

On 8/10 myself and 7 friends departed in Ventura, CA for a nice 80 mile bike ride. This is known to be a very bike friendly area and there are some great routes. Anyway, just befor lunch we were headed down Rt. 192 which is a 2 lane (1 in each direction) road with mild traffic and known to have cyclists. Due tot he nature of this road, we all ride single file to be safe. We had split into 2 groups (4 front and 4 maybe 1/5 mile behind). While approaching a left hand curve, we hear two highly modded cars coming from the opposite direction (bear in mind this is a blind curve). Anyway, they come around the corner probably in the 55-60 range (spped limit 30) and Car#1 (late 80's Mustang maybe) nearly loses control and almost takes the front 4 of us out. Had he lost control, I would not be writing this post. Car#2 (Mid 90s Mustang) follows closely behind but appears to be a more skilled driver.

So, they pass us and the next corner for them is a left. All of a sudden we hear tires squealing and loud crash. Turn around and see that Car#1 lost control on the second curve and flipped his car up into an embankment on the side of the road. Car#2 apparently to avoid hitting Car#1 clipped a telephone pole and ended up in the same embankment.

The front half of our group stopped to make sure they hadn't hit any of the rear half (which fortunately they did not). A member of the rear half of our group sees the entire crash and goes to ask them if they are ok (I had no pity and no intention to help them if they were hurt - karma is a b***h). Driver of Car#1 gets out and tells here there were cyclists in the middle of the road and he had to swerve not to hit them . This is BS as why would we ride in the middle of the road against traffic around a blind corner? Then, she calls him out for driving like a d*****bag and speeding and he tells her he couldn't have been speeding because his skid marks were'nt dark enough . Unreal. So, we did them a favor and reported their accident to the police (against their wishes) as their cars weren't going to be going anywhere anyway.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt but I'd like to remind everyone (cyclists and "spirited" drivers) to exercise caution out there on the road. Don't be a dbag and get someone killed.

Cliffs - Two Mustangs doing 55-60 in a 30 lose control around a corner, crash, and blame it on cyclists on the other side of the road.

Cheers

Rob

Holy swiss cheese batman...

So, after being taken out by a car going 60MPH, the 4 of the 5 people in the front group not only was not hurt, but was able to go back to check on the second group?

Miraculous...

so he's going for a spirited drive on a windy mountain road and then wants to blame someone else when his driving isn't up to par?

furthermore, mustangs suck at driving on that kind of road. Sounds like the driver got what was coming to him.

The cops (usually) aren't stupid. They'll be able to figure out what really happened.

There's absolutely no reason for a pack of cyclists to be in the middle of the road on a blind curve unless they've got a death wish. To even make the claim that you guys would do that defies common sense.

Then again, this is the "New America" where nobody takes accountability for their own stupidity anymore and nothing is ever their fault...

Glad you guys are okay.

Ugh... okay I'm not going to hijack this thread, thereby changing it into a grammar lesson...

Thanks all

None of us were hit but he very nearly lost it. I posted this over on bimmerforums.com which is a board I've been with since 2003. Good group over there and they've not responded much to the post. Anyway, be careful out there.

Cheers

Rob

Dead Man's Curve recorded by Jan and Dean

I was cruisin' in my Stingray late one night
When an XKE pulled up on the right
And rolled down the window of his shiny new Jag
And challenged me then and there to a drag
I said, "You're on, buddy, my mill's runnin' fine
Let's come off the line now, at Sunset and Vine
But I'll throw you one better if you've got the nerve
Let's race all the way
To Dead Man's Curve"

Dead Man's Curve, it's no place to play
Dead Man's Curve, you best keep away
Dead Man's Curve, I can hear 'em say
Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve

The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You should of heard the whine from my screamin' machine
I flew past LaBrea, Schwab's, and Crescent Heights
And all the Jag could see were my six tail lights
He passed me at Doheny then I started to swerve
But I pulled her out and there we were
At Dead Man's Curve

Dead Man's Curve, it's no place to play
Dead Man's Curve

Well, the last thing I remember, Doc, I started to swerve
And then I saw the Jag slide into the curve
I know I'll never forget that horrible sight
I guess I found out for myself that everyone was right
Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve

Dead Man's Curve, it's no place to play
Dead Man's Curve, you best keep away
Dead Man's Curve, I can hear 'em say
Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve
