Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sorry to hear that 55/Rad, that's a real shame. I'm always surprised that so many people get harassed while riding because it's something I've never experienced in NYC and for a long time I used to ride throughout Midtown where I always expected to be pestered by cabbies and delivery trucks. Sure there were exchanges here and there but nothing that lead to a confrontation.

If you come here, better pony up and buy a good trainer for 6 months of the year. Either that, or join a fitness club.

Rad, you shoulda just whipped out your pecker and in your best Crocodile Dundee impression said, "That's not a gun mate, THIS is a gun!"

After reading rad's story, I'm picturing Steve Martin firing randomly on the freeway and thinking that's what rad should've been doing.

We should somehow combine this thread with the one where the guy witnesses the bike theft.

That scene in LA Story also ran through my mind - but not until a couple hours later. Funny stuff.

The San Fernando Valley is a nasty little place. Most people flee the 'Valley to Simi, Valencia or the beaches. Oh, somebody mentioned nunchucks, they're a felony in California.

L.A. Sucks.

Yet another reason not to engage. I don't understand why people on bicycles try to get even with people in vehicles.

I haven't had a chance to catch up to anyone yet, so no drama so far.

Never engage.

It's a decision between making a point and getting killed. Sure, you may be able to make your point and stay alive. But then again, maybe not.

I also like to think I am better person than whomever is threatening me. Damaging the vehicle would eliminate this possibility.

Hmmmm. I live in the heart of the San Fernando Valley (Northridge) and have been riding for 3 years with no such problems.
My commute to work would take me thru North Hills, Pacomia and San Fernando and a regular weekend ride into Chatsworth which all have alot of gang activity. Only got yelled at once from some twit kid Pacomia.

Did I ever mention that I worked in a gunshop for 11 years here in the valley?

I rode here for years with never a problem. Grew up in Chatsworth, went to CSUN, lived in Northridge and Sherman Oaks for many years. But it cannot be denied that there are areas of the Valley I wouldn't want to venture into to.

Glad you are okay, Rad. Yeah, you can never tell what people will do. Sometimes it is best to keep your mouth shut, but I do the same thing sometimes and tell people what I think.

I'm spending the summer in North Carolina and was out riding with another guy in June.

Had just passed a "Bicycle Pathways NC" sign when a truck that had snuck up on us is laying on the horn behind me. I turned around to see what was up and he gunned the engine at us, so I gave him a nice single finger wave as he passed. He slams on his brakes, nearly causing my friend to rear-end him. I pull inside of him to see what the heck his problem is.

"You got a problem? I don't think you know what it is like around here." (him)
"Whatever, go f*ck yourself!"
"Boy, if my wife wasn't here with me in the truck, I'd shoot your dang head off."

Nice! Guy was white haired, probably 65 years old, in a new F-150 that was red. I still wonder if he was going to actually shoot me (I doubt it) but still am baffled by the fact that someone might shoot someone over a middle finger. With a dude like that, I'm sure he's been given the finger and told to f*ck off before, as he clearly was a huge d-bag.

Favorite part: it was Sunday around 11:00...which means he might have been on his way home from church

>I love LA as I lived here for 35 years and it is my home town and all, but I'm glad I only come to visit now.<

> L.A. sucks. So glad I left six years ago [snip] Let's just deed over all of L.A. to the Mexican Mafia<

So, when a white guy in a pick-up truck nearly ran me off the highway and did the same thing to the guy a quarter mile down the road as we were cycling the Chico, CA Wildflower Century, I should assume the following:

1) Even though I went to college for a while in the tiny and beautiful town of Chico, because something unpleasant happened to me while cycling, I should be glad I only come to visit now.

and

2) Chico must suck and Chicoans should deed all of Chico over to the Red-neck Mafia

By the way, I'm glad 55/Rad didn't mention skin color/ethnicity/nationality, as per another BF thread going on at present. But one unhappy and even potentially serious incident between a cyclist and someone in a car shouldn't lead to derogative generalizations about a city, whether it be massive L.A. or little Chico.

And I'm sorry to see 2WheelFury did mention nationality in his post.
