I was "Flashed" Today in L.A.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was "Flashed" Today in L.A.

Unfortunately, it wasn't the good kind.

I was reminded today that there are some things you should never do on a bike while riding in certain parts of Los Angeles.

So, I'm in town to visit my mom and do some work. I drove down in a rental car with the boys and dropped them off at mom's while I loaded a bike and headed over to Burbank Airport from Chatsworth. I dropped the car off, hopped on the bike and headed back towards Chatsworth.

I'm heading west on Vanowen near Laurel Canyon when a car zips by and the passenger yells, startling me. I scream something unintelligible back and pass them as they waited for the next light. The passenger mumbled something and I ignored him.

As they passed again, they slowed down and drove right next to me for a few seconds. Then I heard..."you best keep your mouth shut mother ******" As I looked over, all I could see was a hand flashing a pistol.

"Ummm...yeah...I hear you" was all I could muster. I immediately took the next right and prayed they didn't follow or come looking for me.

I love LA as I lived here for 35 years and it is my home town and all, but I'm glad I only come to visit now.

So, did you smile, pull out the 'ol double barrel shotgun, and say, "That's pretty nice. Here's what I carry!!!"

Ok, that wasn't funny. Well, yes it was. But only in the movie.

Good God man. Be careful. There really are psychos out there.

It happens in Japan too. Only with nunchucks. On a random note, Firefox says I am not spelling nunchucks right and suggests I use one of the following: nun chucks, upchucks, woodchucks, chucks, hunchbacks.

Glad you are alright.

I think in a situation like that, you just mine your own business and not yell back at cars. Not saying what he

did was right. Being that it's in L.A., you sometimes have to look the other way. I have incidents where cars

yell and startle me but I don't say anything back because when it comes down to it. We are on bikes, if there

was trouble, I doubt we can get away fast enough.

I soiled my chamois just reading this.

(I'm guessing trying to get a plate number was about 238th on the list of things to do at the moment...I certainly don't blame you...I just wish these stories would have happy endings)

Yeah that's intense. After being around people that would possibly do that, the only reason they would do such a thing is to impress their buddies. Sad, but true. Half of them would never do it, but then again the other half of them... you might want to keep your mouth shut. I've been around some pretty shady kids before, never in LA, but none the less.

Years ago two punks knocked a friend off of his bike with their car on Victory near Pierce College. They turned and came back to ask him how he liked it, with gun in hand. He just quietly waited until they left.

I grew up in west L.A. After I graduated high school I moved away to go to college and never looked back. I miss family and friends but not the traffic, smog and crime.

Why didn't you just shoot him?

Whenever I hear an LA story, Under the Bridge is stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Thanks

This makes me think twice about my strategy.

When someone yells or throws something from a passing vehicle, my plan is to kick off their mirror when I catch up to them at a light.
I haven't had a chance to catch up to anyone yet, so no drama so far.

L.A. sucks. So glad I left six years ago. I don't go there anymore for any reason. It's a lost cause. Long Beach is going that way too (large portions of it already are a write-off) so I'm going to be moving to either south O.C. or north San Diego county soon (next 6-12 months probably).

Let's just deed over all of L.A. to the Mexican Mafia and be done with it. Last one to leave, please turn off the lights.
