Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The stupidest question someone has asked you

In regards to you and your road bike.

The other day my 26 year old sister, who is a school teacher, asked

"where is your kick stand"

I replied

"$3500 bikes don't have kick stands, they stand on their own"

She didn't get it.

To you it may be obvious. But, for anyone who doesn't ride a racing bike, that really is not a stupid question.

A stupid question is generally one I consider to have the obvious answer within it.

Ex:

Q: "I once read there are like 9 or 10 planets around the sun. Is all that space stuff for real?"

A: Wide-eyed blank stare.

i love your answer, either quick wit or you've been asked that before.

i have a mtb and a road bike, i often try to put the kickstand down my road bike, even though its not there.

btw teachers don't know everything. i'm a dance teaching and i certainly don't know everything about dance. i teach hip-hop and i can lecture someone on the origins and history of hip-hop for an hour or two, longer with videos. but i do not know a complete history of it.

This is one that always come to mind:

One day, a few years ago on an Aussie radio sports show during the Tour de France, Phil Anderson was being interviewed by a couple of ex-footballers and a cricketer. The interview was going along nicely for while, with Phil going into great detail about team tactics, the upcoming stages, the chances of an Aussie winning a stage, etc, etc, when the ex-criketer says: "how light are the bikes?" Ya had to be there.

Actually, the classic question when they see road bike shoes is

'Can you walk in those?'

The correct answer of course is: 'Not really'.

What bike should I buy?

Which is better: Campy or Shimano?

Why do you shave your legs?

Question: "Do you wear those gay-looking tight shorts"

Answer: "Sure do, i dont have a vendetta against my 'boys' or my ass"

(funny thing is, most of the people who ask this question wouldnt think twice about putting on football pants, which are thinner and even tighter.)

I've had two separate people over this last year ask if my tires are solid rubber. They did not understand the concept of pneumatic tires on bicycles. I was a bit at a loss to explain it.

This year while watching the tour at work my co-worker looks at me with a serious look and says,
Co- "How do you not get hemorrhoids from riding on those skinny seats?"
Me- "I'm sorry, What?"

It's always about the skinny seat.. I guess that's what I get for living in beach cruiser land.

In the bathroom at school after just getting off my bike:
Him:"So, how far do you ride each day?"
Me:"10 miles"
Him:*eyes open up* "guess that isn't all that much on a bike"
Me: No, not at all, especially when i ride 130-150 on the weekend.

he looked genuinely shocked that anyone would ride such a distance under their own power. This guy looked like your typical beer inhaling frat boy. Wouldn't call him fat but sounds and looks like one of those guys who would ride to the corner store 1000m away to get a quick snack.

very clever, and now i'm surprised that no one thought of that before. Guess it's a good thing this thread title isn't a question.

Not cycling-related, but definitely the stupidest question anyone has ever asked me:

Playing basketball, broke my ankle. Laying on the ground, grimacing (and probably howling) in pain. My foot is twisted, with the sole of my shoe pointing towards my head. My buddy comes over, looks at me, and asks "hey man, are you alright?"

"Why arent you riding on the other side of the road?"

(I get this mostly from oldsters who hail from a time when it was common to ride against traffic)

Along the same lines both from the same coworker.

Pretty soon you are going to be too old to play with bikes.

and

I'd like to see you ride this much in your 30s. You are going to have to give it up eventually.

I am in my 30s.

not bike related, but I worked in Yellowstone National Park for a little, and a friend of mine was asked when we put the animals away for the night...

I think he said 9:00pm.

Someone else asked where the lever was that turned Old Faithful on
