Thy Cycling Gods Hath Smot Thee

I picked up my first road bike in January 2007, quickly became a Cat 4 rider after a summer of racing and was loving it. This March my football coach asked me to come back out for the team to play wide receiver, my dream position (I did not play the fall before), and I accepted. So from March to July I had to give up biking to lift 4 days a week in addition to working 40 hours a week. I figured I could sacrifice one season to play football one last time (senior in college). I just found out yesterday that I tore my meniscus in my right knee in the middle of July and will most likely undergo surgery before I go back to school, making football quite impossible as I will be on crutches and with a brace for many weeks. The cycling gods are vengeful.

I have to get the surgery because I can't run, jump or do anything right now and even biking hurts some. Has anyone ever undergone this type of surgery and successfully made it back onto the bike? I am figuring that it shouldn't be a problem but considering I still have like 50 years of biking left I want to be sure.

My wife had a lateral miniscus tear, underwent surgery (outpatient), and was back on the bike within a month and running within 2-3 months.

After my last knee surgery I was left with no meniscus, cartilage, or anything else, except bone, ligaments, and tendons. I do have the added bonus of some scar tissue, so I have that going for me.

A torn meniscus really isn't that big of a deal. In the world of knee injuries, a meniscus tear is sort of like a broken fingernail. Your procedure will most likely be an outpatient ordeal, take less than an hour, and you will most likely be on a stationary bike within a week and a half. I'm surprised your out for the season, but you only get two of your own knees, so take care of them while your young.

You will live to ride again.

When I saw "Smot", I thought you'd gotten smacked in the head by some snot.

Good luck with surgery and recovery.

I have never played wide receiver before and don't start, so to be out more than a month would basically render my season useless. This is only the 2nd year that I have played football, so I am not like a die hard player, I realize that sitting out for more than a month and than trying to play might not be the greatest use of my time. I'm still hoping for the best

Is 'smot' a combination of 'smote' and 'snot'? Ewwww!

I was running straight line sprints 5 days after having a medial meniscus removed. My understanding is that a repair takes longer to heal than if they just cut the whole thing out. That was knee surgery 1 of 6 (and counting). I would say you will be fine to ride again within a few weeks...
