Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Beginner to Road racing

i would like to start off by saying that yes, i have looked through the sticky posts.

I want to start racing in Cat 5 races, how do i go about getting a cat 5 liscense? also what is the process of moving up in the ranks.

If someone could also post a link to the application for cat5 that would be appreciated

thanks

you're a cat5 once you buy the license, not when you register. You move up to 4 buy starting 10 races and then requesting the upgrade. From there you need to place in races to advance, but by the time you're there you'll know all about that.

If you aren't racing this year, hold off on the license til Dec 1.

This is a good point, you can buy 1 day licenses at races for cat 5, and at this point you probably will not get enough races in to make buying an annual license for 2008 worth it.
The specific information on how to upgrade is on the USAC website in several places, it is different for track, road, CX, and MTB.

yes, all you have to do is apply to be a cat5. It costs $60 for the year. That's why they are saying to wait. You could do a one day license for $10 if there are any races left where you are. Check to see if there are any. Alot of local race series are probably winding up right about now. Ours is.

here's a link to USA cycling federation's guidlines for requesting upgrades that yo uwere asking about

You might want to start riding with people that could answer these questions, otherwise you could have a very shocking introduction to racing.

10 mass start races. There's no time limit as far as I know.

Road Bike Racing forum.

Short answers:

1. www.usacycling.com. Apply. Pay. Receive.
2. 10 mass start races. Unless you're secretly talented, you may think twice (or more) about moving up to the 4's after 1 or 2 races.

actually, i read through them again. To make sure i didnt miss them. I was just asking a few simple questions that a few people actually answered instead of being a smartass about it. I do not know much about racing and i am not trying to act like it, all i expected (as i expect from the forum) is for more knowledgeable people to post and inform people like me with valuable information.

if you had read them thoroughly to begin with, instead of being a lazy, then you would have found all of the answers to the question that you asked.

that's why there's a sticky in the RACING forum. duh.

The sticky at the top of the Road Racing page hasn't been edited since April.

Thus, that rules out Botto editing the FIRST POST which includes a DIRECT LINK to the page where you BUY A LICENSE.

Kids these days. Want everything handed to them on a silver platter, right the hell now.
