Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dump truck draft for 58mph

Man, this was fun. Lunch ride today, just doing some SST. Then I saw the perfect dump truck. Average wattage was only 542W for 32s.

0 to (almost?) 60 in 35s...

There's some sort of data drop at the peak, so I guess I went a tiny bit faster. It also appears that the powertap hub-cadence measurement is limited to 140rpm, but Sheldon's gearing calculator shows 174rpm (in a 53-12).

No, 0.31 miles with about a 50 ft drop...

Dump trucks are your friend. Try to find a full one so it won't kill your top end during acceleration

Isn't this kind of riding frowned upon since many people have been injured/killed doing it?

Yeah - I've been drafting cars on E. Park road in Cedar Park on the way in in the mornings. They seem to freak out at the crazy cyclist tailgating them and accelerate too hard. I've only been able to stay with 'em to about 40'ish. I'll look for dump trucks.

But, did you blow past the truck when you decided that was enough hammering for the day?

Many? The trick is to come out a bit every couple hundred meters and get a look in front. Of course, I wasn't using that trick today -- I was just staring at a mud flap, growling.

My best is 214rpm, IIRC. You'd be surprised what you can do.

No, no. You're confusing this with riding brakeless fixies.

Seriously - good job mate.
Were you getting nervous @ 50+ mph? I would've $hit myself at those speeds.

Heh. With the added benefit that it would be less likely to kill you during deceleration, I would think.

(not you personally, I think this is awesome, but geez I'm not nearly crazy enough to try that)

Nice going WR

Always wanted to do that

I only ever managed 188rpm on my fixed though.

4ft or so, peaking around the passenger side a bit. I was only maybe 2 ft from a completely clear bail out to a very wide shoulder.

Here's a street view of where I was at the top speed (but we were in the right lane).

I'm only a spinner for the top end though. For the Tuesday Nighter last night, I averaged 95rpm.

Wow... I think the highest was 178rpm on the rollers in my home, means easy spinning. And that was scary trying to to stay on the rollers.
