Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New method for curing hand pain?

Well I know hand pain has been a strong subject lately and I think I found something that might have cured mine. I went on my ride tonight and felt none after doing some exercises for the last two days so I thought it would be suitable to share it here.

I come from rock climbing (bouldering) and used to spend alot of time using one of these.

(I personally use the black heavy tension because I was climbing but I'm sure it would be excessive for this)

I just would leave in my car and do hundreds of reps in traffic etc. Anyway I was thinking two days ago "hey maybe if I build up some hand strength again my hand pain will go away". I've done about 800 reps in the last two days and no hand pain tonight. Maybe it was a fluke but it makes sense to me, I'll try and revisit this post in a week or two and give an update. For $14.99 it's worth a try, it can never hurt to have strong hands anyway.

Actually, the gloves with padding made it WAY worse.

Yah man, when I was still bouldering I never had back pains on the bike, or hand pains, the only thing was some foot numbness. Now that i've stopped climbing in the gym and heading out on the weekends I've gotten alot weaker in my core and I can see all sorts of little problems starting. Strong core=strong human, people really neglect their core.

Maybe you were gripping your handlebars too tightly. Learn to relax on the bike. Your hands should be more like resting on the handlebars than gripping them.

I didn't so much have the hand problems when I first started, it's more now that I'm getting back on the bike, but I also made a more aggressive handle bar height change. So realistically it could be from my hand muscles atrophying or the fit, I'd assume the fit but I like it so I'd rather try this route to cure the pain. It's definitely not from gripping it too tight.
