Cycling while under the influence of marijuana

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling while under the influence of marijuana

Im sitting here with a guy who claims that hes "ultra focused" on cycling when when he smokes pot right before going out for a ride. Its funny because hes actually in shape and a pretty good rider! I find this funny because while I eat correctly and train to reach my performance goals...this guy just ripped a bacon double cheeseburger for lunch and will smoke (alot of) pot before proably riding maybe 30 miles tonight. So can anyone comment on this phenomenon or maybe have experience? Besides this being both illegal and extremly dangerous to himself and pedestrians (lol).....I just dont see how smoking pot can help his performance especially lung wise!

This should be moved to the MTB Forum, where it will be greeted with responses like 'yeah, so?'.

You can easily forget fatigue and if he does end up ramming into someone, it won't hurt all that much

Weed has different effects on different people, so who knows. All it ever did for me was make me hungry and then want to take a nap.
I wonder if Botto knows people who smoke and ride, living in the Netherlands and all.

Well, I don't know that I would smoke and ride, but back in the day (statute of limitations should apply, since it was well over 20 years ago) I remember...

I played what I think was my best game of ping pong ever, I was able to really focus on the ball. However, I strongly suspect that if something else in the room had caught my attention, I would have been easily distracted as well.

I also remember a couple of years later coming up with a revolutionary solution to a problem. It would have been incredible. Unfortunately, I forgot what the solution was as I tried to remember what problem it was a solution to.

back in the late 80s - when i did bong hits every hour on the hour - i was also a MTBer. for me, smoking lots of dope killed my lung capacity. this only became apparent after i quit, though.

Dunno if this is a troll, but I've got some experience on this.

A climber acually won a world championship in sport climbing whille stoned. You don't smoke 25 joints a day, either...often times one little puff is enough. It can be very nice for calming the mind, and reminded yourself to keep a positive attitude. People think it's some sorta wacky drug, but it's just a relaxant. It can be pretty nice to have that attitude change right before pushing yourself hard.

Just this past week I was riding south on 9W out of Piermont NY, and while climbing State Line Hill I got a whiff of some really sweet ganja. I'm looking all over expecting to see some teenage stoners standing in the woods or in someone's backyard, and eventually realize it's the roadie in the team kit riding just up ahead of me! Guy was puffing away at a fattie, and when he was done he tossed the..oh crap, it's been so long since I've partaken I can't even remember the word for the tiny remains of a smoked joint...he tossed it on the road and then proceeded to mash the rest of the way up hill at a respectable 18-19mph. I was impressed. Definitely had never seen "serious" road cyclists toking up while on a ride before.

Ah, but back in the day...circa 1982, when I was a decidedly "un-serious" cyclist... I used to regularly get stoned before riding my bike home from work. At night. Without any lights. And without a helmet. Still some of the most fun I've ever had on a bike.

I do have some experience in this area. We race often in Prospect Park (Brooklyn, NY) and the peloton has to ascend a rather shallow .25 mile hill each lap. But it's enough of an upgrade to slow the pace down to <20mph most laps (sometimes they charge up it faster I guess, but by later in the race things settle down). That's where the local rasta boys fire up their spleefs, and I swear there are some days there where I think the entire peloton would test positive for THC from the contact high we get from pedaling through the Reefer Haze.

Whoa.

This may sound counter-productive to most, but I enjoy smoking before rides because it allows my mind to wander. It may not be best for speed and intervals (though I've found very little difference between being stoned and being sober and doing this), but for long endurance stuff, it makes the time just fly by. Also great if you're listening to some tunes on the ride.

I live in Canada, so I never worry about carrying it with me while I'm on a ride either (I have been caught with it so many times now and nothing ever comes of it, the cops honestly do not waste their time on it), so I can top myself off if I start fading out. Christ, that last sentence sounds pathetic, but here's the bottom line...

You remember that blissful feeling of bike-riding when you're a kid? Obviously, riding at an older age will always somewhat force you to revisit that feeling, but blazing up before a ride brings that nostalgia right back to the forefront. It's the simple things in life, you know?

As I understand it, weed lowers your blood pressure ... in some people significantly. It has always struck me that if this is indeed the case, riding while high could be dangerous if you are pushing yourself hard.

Can anyone confirm / deny this?

Don't want to start a fight, but I've never stayed away from cycling because I didn't have weed. I love cycling a lot more than weed, but I like having my cake and eating it too.

Because of that analogy, I now have the munchies.

For some of us cycling IS the drug. Which is why the Scott Addict may be my next road bike, just because the name is so appropriate.

Idk....I think in life you find that if someone needs to smoke pot in order to enjoy one thing...they most likely need to smoke to cope with just about everything..

but whos to say...the guy I know who does it before riding is a good rider and a good guy as well so whatever.
