Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I got tagged for speeding today! 65km in a 50km zone

I was hammering down a hill to catch up to a cement truck so I could draft it when the road leveled out ahead . A police officer jumps out onto the road and signals to pull over. The cement truck pulls over but the cop points to me to pull over also! He has a couple words with the cement truck drive and lets him go but gives me a speeding ticket!

I belevie that he was using lazer technology.

So, how do I fight this $89 ticket? Or, do I just bit the bullet and pay it?

T.J.

Pay the ticket with a check, and frame the ticket and the check when it clears

Yeah... I was thinking of that but, I just paid a speeding ticket a couple months ago. (My first in about 4 years) My insurance company allows for 1 ticket for every 2 years or they surcharge 20% for 2 years.

I was thinking that I could claim that the cement truck was going 65lm / hr. How could a guy on a bike possibly travel at 65km/hr ?

can you post a picture of the ticket? I assume it will say somewhere on the ticket that your vehicle was a bicycle

You could try arguing that he must have picked up the cement truck, and state "65 kph! I have never seen those speeds before on my bicycle!"

Icould if you really want me too.. but all it says is "Speding" of the "Traffic Saftey Act"
The cop said "Although you are on a bike, you still need to abide by all of the rules of the road"

Bahh....

It should be easy enough to convince a judge the reading was from the truck.

However, that is moot unless you scan and post the ticket.

Frame the ticket and hang it on the wall. No one knows you were going downhill. And I won't say anything.

Did the officer note that you had a cyclometer? If not, tell the judge that you were pacing with the cement truck and that you didn't think the two of you were going faster than 50 km/h.

Though, that might not fly if you don't scan and post the ticket.

I probably will do that...

On my last ticket, I went down to the Provincial Court House and negotiated a much smaller amount with a Justice of the Peace. (You can do that here in Alberta) Maybe the JP will throw it out so it doesn't have to go to trial. I will try that avenue first.

It would look nice framed above my bike repair bench.

EDIT:

PICTURE OF TICKET REMOVED AS IT SHOWS PERSONAL INFORMATION. (Name, Address...)

Would have been better is there was a spot for license plate, year, make, and model.

If he was using laser how did he clock you, a person on a bike? I was under the impression that laser speed guns needed something to reflect off of like a license plate or other hard surface. I dunno, maybe it can reflect of a person. Seems a bit odd to me though.
