cops beat up bicyclist in Denver

You've probably seen the video of police officer Patrick Pogan attacking a cyclist in New York City last month. There is now a similar incident in Denver. A group of plainclothes, undercover cops attacked a bicyclist in front of the Colorado Rockies baseball stadium, slamming his head face down into the pavement and breaking off his 2 front upper teeth. They then identify themselves as police officers and arrest the bicyclist for assaulting a police officer.

In court, the bicyclist's attorney questions the police officers, who lie about what happened. Then the lawyer pulls out some surprise evidence. A local TV news crew was filming the baseball game and videotaped the incident. The lawyer plays the tape in court, proving that 2 police officers committed perjury. The DA drops all charges against the bicyclist. Now he might have to prosecute the cops instead.

There is a copy of the video on the TV station's web site:

Here are some articles from yesterday's Denver newspapers:

That's horrible.

dcbikeguy 08-14-08 04:16 PM

Dude is gonna have a payday. Cops are going to the pokey. Lawyer boy played that beautifully.

TeddyKGB 08-14-08 04:17 PM

Man, that's unbelievable. Thanks for the info...glad the guy is alright.

ehidle 08-14-08 04:21 PM

Those cops should get life in prison without parole for abusing their power to brutally beat a civilian just because they could..

Iwannagofast 08-14-08 04:22 PM

wow that is horrible. Poor guy, what the police did was completely inappropriate and they could have had other ways of getting the guys attention beside breaking his front 2 teeth. :(

uke 08-14-08 04:23 PM

He deserved it! Go police! Show that civilian who's The Man!

Oh, wait. Maybe this is why we shouldn't always assume
people are guilty because people in uniforms say they are.

LostitoaBianchi 08-14-08 04:24 PM

What the heck is there to talk about, they totally went way over the line and got caught red handed .
" is it possible they are gonna face criminal charges?" Stupid ass question, these *******s better go sit.

urbanknight 08-14-08 04:25 PM

Terrible. What makes them think they can beat up anybody just for running a red light? I hope they lose their jobs and go to prison.

timmhaan 08-14-08 04:29 PM

i'm too angry to write anything decent in this thread.

Campag4life 08-14-08 04:30 PM

As with the NYC debacle, I have to side with the officers. People who ride bicycles are a menace.

I was wondering when someone would come in and defend the cops.

I've often said...

"I know from whom the Police are supposed to be protecting us, I just wonder who's protecting us from them."

If not for the video/news crew, that guy is in jail for a felony he did not commit.

He clearly didn't play it so beautifully during the trial! Where was his effort to get witnesses before the emergence of this film???

Welcome to life as a minority/adolescent/working-class male in America! Except most of the time, we aren't lucky enough to have TV news crews for backup.

Keep this in mind the next time you hear about another poor, dark, or young person sentenced to prison. Officers aren't born with some kind of integrity gene, popular opinion to the contrary.

The Blue Wall makes me sick. I'm not going to claim a conspiracy theory and say all cops are crooked, but I do believe there is a lot more abuse of power than we would care to think about, just not all of it gets caught on tape. I do however believe that the majority of them would lie for a brother officer, as happened in this case.

i hope the coppers go to jail

permanentjaun 08-14-08 04:50 PM

I'm not defending the cops whatsoever. They do deserve to go to jail. I do have to point out two things though that could have prevented all this.

1. The bicyclist not run the red light.
2. The bicyclist not instigate anything by flipping the undercover cops hat off. This is noted at around 1:30 into the video.

The whole scenario could have been avoided if the person was not a freaking idiot. He could as well have ignored the cops in the first place. Again, the police are in the wrong and deserve prison time. But this isn't a story about cops beating up a bicyclist. This is a story about cops beating up an idiot.

Sure he did. Not sure of the details obviously, but assuming he had it pre-trial, he didn't disclose it. He set those cops up for felony perjury.

Now, when he takes them to civil court for the big $$ - it plays beautifully. They are showed as EXTRA crooked. If he had disclosed it pre-trial the DA would have had the opportunity to explain it in some way.

Yup...cops that beat that old guy all rode Cannondales.

huerro 08-14-08 04:59 PM

It makes me wonder how many people in Denver are serving time because they were charged by these *******s with resisting arrest or assaulting an officer.

Disgusting.

Perhaps more importantly, he now has a record of the sworn testimony in a form that will likely be admissible in the subsequent civil trial, or at a minimum, available for impeachment during cross-examination.

Though it is extremely unlikely that the civil case would ever go to trial.

felt1 08-14-08 05:16 PM

Those cops will not do a day in jail. They never do.
