What is the deal with serving potatoes on organized rides?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is the deal with serving potatoes on organized rides?

Is this some kind of wonderfood that I didn't know about? It doesn't seem like a very appetizing snack 35 miles into a century.

i think they have lots of sodium, or something along those lines. good carbs anyway.

i see those a lot on organized rides too, so it is a common thing to offer.

I think they have a lot of sugars in them that your body can breakdown and access quickly, which then you can use to dial it up to 400-500 watts.

I could be wrong though.

Anyway, like I was sayin', potatoes is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautee it. Dey's uh, potato-kabobs, potato creole, potato gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple potatoes, lemon potatoes, coconut potatoes, pepper potatoes, potato soup, potato stew, potato salad, potatoes and potatoes, potato burger, potato sandwich. That- that's about it.

I regularly eat potatoes and eggs. Good stuff. Poke the potatoes with a fork a few times, wash them, and throw them in the microwave. Wait six minutes. Use that time to fry a couple of eggs. I like a 1-1 ratio between eggs and potatoes. When you're done, put 'em in a plate together and dig in. I take mine with butter and hot sauce. For a drink, I like the Apple juice punch blend they sell at Walmart. Good simple meal that fills you up for hours.

They also break down easily in your stomach. So in short, yes it is a wonder food. Over the summer I read an article from one of the TDF chefs and he fixed a potato snack for his team's riders.

Potatoes are awesome! Nothing hits the spot more then a warm boiled potato, half way through a 3 hour ride in miserable weather.

Potatoes are a great source of complex carbohydrates, they break down into a sugar that you body can use and don't spike like energy bars. They are easy to digest and are actually pretty convenient to carry in a jersey. In bicycling magazine earlier in the year the soigneur from Chipotle was praising the benefits of taking small potatoes and boiling them and then wrapping the halves in aluminum foil.

Be stoked on getting potatoes! On my century all they were serving was those 3 packs of austin peanut butter and cheese crackers, some unripe bananas, and a bunch of sugary energy bars and cookies that were thrown down to them from the companies. It was a American Diabetes Association ride, I remember telling the people at the stops..."jesus are you TRYING to give us Diabetes?".

Bland food is less likely to upset people with weak stomachs. Hopefully, they will also have more tasty food like fresh pastries and fresh fruits.

I have never seen potatoes available on an organized ride, but I wish I had.

Yea I read that article, I think it was one of the chefs for team slipstream. He also included neat instructions on how to wrap the potato in foil in such a way that it would be easy for the rider to unwrap it while cycling. IMO a boiled potato with a little salt and pepper is wayyyyy more tasty than an energy bar.

hhhm ok let's see.
Easy to cook
Easy to prepair
Easy to eat
Good carbs
Not to much in sugars
You can salt them so you get electrolytes
Very little fiber which causes stomach upset

Yup pretty much your wonder food for cycling I would say.

Potato skins are a good source of potassium, too.
