Yeah!!! I grow out my beard every winter...and it's got lots of non-dark color in it...but that doesn't mean I have to strap my butt to a hammock and hate people that have hard steel between their legs, dammit! Why can't we just all eat Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream and take warm showers together?

You fall into my trap so easy, Mr. Bond.
You have just validated every wedgie rider's fear of bents and bent riders!

I have to agree with BOBKAT. Fun is fun, but the hatred has to go.
When I got heavy (AND older), I parked my road bike and bought a recumbent. That was 12,000 miles ago. All 'bent riders come from the diamond frame crowd, for one reason or another. Would a REAL cyclist prefer a person stop riding when a diamond frame was no longer right for them, or are we advocates for all kinds of cycling?
Racing is not everything. However, the recumbent (ridden by an amateur cyclist/business owner) kicked some serious roadie butt in the 2008 Race Across America. And have any of you ridden 81 MPH on a level, closed highway? I know the answer. But a fully faired recumbent has, at the 2002 Human Powered Speed Challange at Battle Mountain, NV.
Most recumbents are much heavier than diamond frames, but there are sub-seventeen pound carbon 'bents. They are fast and they climb almost as well as the diamond frames. With the right engine on board, they are stupid fast on the flats.
My final question: At what age do we get over this stupid, ego stroking 'mine is better than your's' thing?
Tom (still riding after all these beers)

I hope that comment was directed more towards the bent riders in this thread...sure are spending a lot of time trying to justify where their rigs are in comparison to a normal bicycle (yes I said "normal"). For me this thread has been basically about the "riders" - "recumbulators"
And if the comment wasn't? Maybe some of the time spent is trying to educate. Why would anyone need to justify?
This thread started with the posted comment. "Every time I see one of those goofy ass things coming at me on the MUP, they're always swerving out of control going about 10 mph. God damnit."
It kind of labels recumbent riders in a demeaning way. Can't blame anyone for responding.
Truth of the matter, I think there is harldly anything more neat looking than to see DF riders tightly bunched in a Crit buzzing by. My daughter does Crits, TT's and RR's. Recumbents obviously don't belong in Crits or RR's. Also it is probably not best to have one in the middle of riders doing a paceline. Though when I ride with DF's, I make it a point to lead or follow last on my HiRacer. Have been with riders half my age doing pacelines 40 miles or more at +20mph.
Yes I am an over 60 recumbent rider but no beard or beergut. Back surgery a few years back turned me on to the world of recumbents. When you yourself grow older and mature, and perhaps develop conditions in your body that keep you from riding your DF, hope your current lowly opinions of Recumbents doesn't keep you from participating in an activity which might add a few years to your life.

You're new here, so I'll forgive your lack of understanding the nature of the road forums. In a nutshell, all you need to have a great time with all the good folks in here...most of whom thank their lucky stars every day that they can still ride a wedgie...are two things...a sense of humor and a thick skin. .
And I'm a bentrider (most of the time) who hangs out here every day and enjoys it. Of course, riding an upright for 22 years helps me keep my perspective.

Sadly, way too many people just don't 'get it', and get their panties all in a bunch over the silliness that goes on here. But this IS the roadie forum...not the bent forum. Just as you don't see a lot of roadies going into the bent forum and getting all bent out of shape over comments about wedgies, normally the bent riders shouldn't be coming into the roadie forums and getting all bent out of shape over the goofy stuff posted here. Of course everyone is welcome in all forums, but when in Rome....
So welcome to BF and welcome to the roadie forum....I hope you ain't one of those folks with no sense of humor who are easily offended by jockish antics.

Well quite frankly I linked to this post from BROL a recumbent forum, and thought the opinions and dissing were in ernest. Couldn't help but put in my 2 cents. Actually since USCF banned recumbents from competing in Time Trials in 2004 it kind of makes me a little sensitive not being able to compete in an activity which I relish. I have actually heard some mean spirited comments about recumbents firsthand but I am not a DF hater and I guess I don't get it where making dergatory comments is humorous. I actually felt the comment I responded to was kind of crude. It kind of mocked someone who was trying to make a point of saying no bike was better than the other and it would be kind of cool doing away with the mean spirited comments.
Again like you say its a free world and everyone entitled to an opinion.

Hey, we diss ourselves around here as much if not more that we diss everyone else. The comments are not as mean-spirited as you perceive, trust me (even after someone surely chimes in now that they ARE serious). If someone comes over the the Bent forum and disses bents...you can take it serious...in here, not so much.

No wonder he brought me a lemon peeler back in 1972 when I wanted the manta ray. I guess it was as close as you could get to a recumbent at the time. Shame on him for trying to corrupt me at such a young age.

Let me point out some cool logic which was previously overlooked:
Point A- Recumbent Riders are fat old men with beards.
Point B- Recumbent bicycles are actually slower than DF bikes.
Conclusion: If the fat old men with beards were riding DF bikes, they'd be passing you all.

Hey, great thread! I have an Easy Racer Gold Rush and a Specialized S-Works Roubaix. I love them both. I would have replied earlier, but I was busy trimming my beard and cashing my Social Security check.

I have a Bacchetta Ti Aero (recumbent), and I just bought a Specialized Sequoia. Both are great bikes, and have their advantages and disadvantages. In reference to the OP, I am not as maneuverable on the Aero as I am on the Sequoia. Still, I don't feel that I am a "danger" to anyone on the MUP when riding my Aero. While recumbents might seem "scary" to upright riders, the bigger danger on the path, by far, is the unpredictable jogger, roller blader, etc. And I've been around erratic cyclists on DFs too. It's not just a recumbent thing.

This thread has been fun. The whole concept is silly: someone who rides on a MUP is afraid of bents on the MUP. I think they deserve each other.

Dropping hammocks is an art form that requires practice. Basically, you get next to them, beat them mercilessly with a motorcycle chain, continuing your pass once they either crash or stop to tend to the bloody pulp that used to be their head. Remember to clean and re-lube your bike after your ride...blood, bits of flesh and brain matter can cause excessive wear and reduce your average speed by up to 2mph.
All I 'd say is this, if you're prepared to dish out just be prepared to take it back in kind rather than running home with tears in your eyes to Mommy. OK?
In light of that warning. I don't care what you ride. Anything that gets you off the couch is a good thing. Keep riding with that hatchet up your arse, damaging your neck, back & not to mention your perineum (eventually making it impossible for you to achieve, let alone maintain an erection). I'm sure the woman in your life will love you for the last reason.
