The Feeling of Grams; Idiot Consumer!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Feeling of Grams; Idiot Consumer!

I am sitting here with a Record rear cassette in one hand and a Chorus in the other. The Record was purchased for $220, the Chorus for $100 less. The difference is barely perceptible. I better put them back in their proper box, else I won't know which is the better one!

This is nothing new. A better comparison would be between a Veloce and a full Ti Record cassette. You'd feel the difference without a doubt.

...and then take a dump and spend your extra money on something nice....like toilet paper.

Anyone know of a bike build that would effectively cost $1k-$2k cheaper than another bike yet still be within an approximate weight? Say the Real expensive build weighs the UCI minimum and the 'cheaper' bike weighs 16.5 lbs or so.

1. Campy prices are the main reason that Campy is unpopular (except among snobs)
2. Most people don't buy components one at a time

How about a Ritchey 4-Axis stem or Easton EA90 stem (both 125 gr) for $89.00 vs. a Performance Forte stem (135 gr) for $21.99?

Weight-weenieism does not always make sense. But the one thing that is for sure is that you can't really look at individual things. It is the cumulative savings of everything put together that starts to turn into pounds. These days it is possible to buy or build a light bike without going to crazy, but you still need to go off the deep end to really get the weight down. That's when you start needing to spend an extra $100 for each part to save 1oz. But if you save 1oz off 16 parts, that's a pound!

IIRC from the original thread, that was 100g, or about 4oz.

Let's have a drug dealer review:

3.5 grams to an eigth (or 8 ball of the white)
7 grams to a quarter
28 grams to an ounce
112 grams to a quarter pound

Well, I'm not so sure about that....I removed my Record cassette and it seems to have relieved my constipation.
