Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ultragina Snobs.

So I just picked up a new bike TCR C3, and it's loaded with 105. I can tell a few guys in my group think that 105's beneath them. Especially Blutarsky, that guy chaps my hide. Thinks he's so great with his ultraginas, but every time a break happens or a hill comes along I drop him. He must just be jealous that I can drop him on the 105s. Anybody else with the 105 get this sort of attitude?

I ride Tiagra with a 105 rear derailer. I drop people all the time.

Components don't matter... the motor does. I'm willing to put my money on the fact that Paolo Bettini can drop ANYONE in Shimano Sora components.

I ride 105 stuff and I don't recall anyone commenting on the components in four years on the bike. Heck, I don't check people's bike components, I look at how they ride. I think you may be the only one that cares that you ride 105. Just my $0.02.

Totally troll-icious.

Assuming you're for real (a stretch) - maybe they just think you're a di*k.

I typically have no idea what components other riders have, since they usually go past me too fast. Sometimes on a group ride, I see them at the rest stop, and they are nice enough folks who just happen to like riding faster than I do. I think some of them ride 105s and I saw some of that Ultragina stuff too. Pretty stuff. Sleek and shiny... Maybe I'll buy some if my 105 stuff wears out.

Just call me Fred.

unless your TT'ing or in a breakaway those few grams aren't going to matter. i'm still riding rx100's and they shift quite nicely. i also love passing the ppl who are decked out in race uniforms on 5k+ bikes with my low end bike with a rack, lights and often a panier or backpack.

I wasn't sure if I would reply (I ride Ultegra, so this thread is kind of beneath me).

My old bike had Tiagra and I dropped the same people I drop with Ultegra. Components only matter to:

A. Racers.

B. Insecure snobs who can't get any faster, so they buy nicer instead and act like that makes them superior.

I am B. but I readily admit that. I also don't judge anyone for their gear.

I drop people (sometimes) on my Shimano Soras. It's not about the groupset! Except on the climbs and races, I don't get dropped (most of the time)

If I rode with people with an attitude like that described by the OP, I'd find other people to ride with.

Aren't those the important times not to be dropped? What else is there? Descents and flats?

riding 105s gives you the advantage to win races nobody else knows about. you live with the disadvantage of the 105s. just try to keep up with that record/da/red-guy. even if you arrive 5 minutes later at the cafe and he is already over-tipping the cute waitress by the time you schlep yourself sweat-drenched through the door, you would still have won the race if you would have spend a few more $s on better equipment. you know that and he doesn't have to.

you will always win races (even though they mostly exist only in your head since most people just mind their own business) and you saved big $s. good for you.

Yes, but on days such as this if we are not to feed the troll then we would be left with nothing remotely entertaining to do. Pathetic, yes.
