A GENERAL UNDERSTANDING what is considered "fast"?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm slow. No way around it. Really doesn't matter, no interest in racing and I'm too old anyway.

25 mph for 4 hours up a 20% grade into a 40mph headwind in the middle of a driving blizzard.

Or about 4,350 watts for 4 hours.

Now that's fast.

I'd call that fast.

For those on the metric side of the fence thats about 45.28km/hr...for 60 mins, your legs should be jello afterwards....at least mine would be.

How fast was the sprint?

I was in what was left of the pack, completely fried, doing 35mph on the final stretch, and the (other) sprinters were gone. Probably 40mph that day.

On most of my rides my average speed is pretty slow, but they are usually pretty hilly and require a lot of time out of the saddle. on a flat section I'm sure I could average a higher speed.

There is no "too old". Someday you'll look back on your current age as being young. Might as well treat it that way now.

Not my best speeds, but fast while solo to me is:

1. 40k in one hour.
2. Five hour century.

Sprints have to be in here somewhere, but a fast sprint is one where you cross the line before everyone else.

My fastest and longest ride was the Baker to Death Valley road race. 79 miles in 3:07 (25.4mph). But it wasn't fast enough because the leaders were over 10 minutes up the roadd Conditions were mostly crosswind with a small tail component, very slight net elevation gain. My fastest ride when the conditions were taken into account would have to be my 11.1mph 8% uphill TT.

But outside of the pros, my biggest holy crap that's fast moment was hearing about the finishing times for the Cat 1 Elite nationals a few weeks ago. It was something like 120 miles in 4 and half hours. Now that's f'ing fast. A few BF'ers in that too, although they aren't going participate in an internet pissing contest about it... that's what the races are for.

21 mph for 3 miles slight grades, mostly flat. I was trying to stay at 21 for as long as possible for some reason. after 3 miles I said forget it and dropped down to 16-18mph

so 21mph for about 8 minutes. I thought that was good, but you guys are fast!

OP, what's wrong with timing yourself on a loop you know well now, and set yourself a goal of shaving X% off your time by Y date? The idea of a certain speed over distance is pretty meaningless, depending upon so many factors - also there's the internet exaggeration factor to be considered, and the fact that others here (not me) have many years/thousands of miles of riding and sometimes racing/hard training in their legs.

I think setting personal goals are great, but make them meaningful for you rather than for the internet crowd.

I dunno, hanging around 26-28mph solo for several miles at a time. Holding 30mph in a paceline. Averaging 22mph+ over 40 or 50 miles. Sub hour 40km TT. Being there at the end of the A ride when what started out as 12 guys is whittled down to 4 or 5.

really?

Cause my first ride yesterday I did 26 miles in an hour and 20 minutes. I don't have a computer, but you do the math. I'm also 17, and athletic...

So is this good for my first real ride ever? I mean, can I actually look forward to winning/losing some races after some training?

I'm 6'2" and 160lb of muscle. I'm pretty skinny, but I've got some power in the weight room. Could I actually look forward to a biking career if I really tried? I mean that 26 mile ride didn't even bother me. I actually went on a 2nd cruise later that day.

I used to live in Sacramento, and I considered myself okay maintaining ~17-18 mph average on dead flat ground, holding 20+ for some parts over a distance of maybe 20-30 miles. Now that I got to San Francisco, my average for a 40 mile ride was 13 mph. Ouch. But that's coming from a day before doing 55 miles at 12 mph after getting lost and going up the massive hills in Chinatown.
