Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Debernardi Coppi Ciocc...or Lyon?

I wrecked my Mercian, and can't afford to replace due to economy and the dollar. Shipped, a new Mercian would cost me over $1,300. Ouch.

I still want steel, and if it can't be an IF then it's gotta be lugged. And not from Taiwan. And frame has to be les than $800 or close to it.

I'm looking at these:

Debernardi in either Thron O/S, SLX, or SL lugged steel - all with tigged chrome forks
Coppi in Neuron steel with carbon fork
Ciocc in Deda steel with carbon fork

There may also be some stock Lyon frames available (builder up in Seattle) via GVH or direct from Lyon.

Anybody riding one of those Italian frames, or the Lyon?

How 'bout the Lyon?

Are those Italian still really made in Italy?

Are the rumors about the Italian paint true - are they that bad?

Anbody riding or know of the Lyon steel handmade bikes?

Any other suggestions for a quality steel lugged frame not made in Taiwan under $1K?

Have you taken a look at this?

I would get a Debernardi Zona or a Coppi Neuron.

Everything on that page was made in Italy (Coppi, Ciocc, Debernardi, Guerciotti, Mondonico) or France (Cyfac).

You might find an option here as well. I was real close to buying a Ciocc EOM but an eBay bid that I didn't expect to stand up did...

I would consider #214, #218, #52, #171, #195 and maybe #238 and #240.
