Just watched "Breaking Away" is 50+ mph possible?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes he sounded exactly like Macho Man.

Hit 63 on a tandem decent in Nova Scotia. Passed an elderly couple (in the right lane) in a Mercedes on the way down. Was very tempted to move from the shoulder to the left lane to pass them, but thought better. Looked left and smiled at the passenger as we went by, but couldn't see the response because the air flow got under my glasses and watered out my eyes. They did manage to pass us after the decent, though.

In the movie (I have seen it), what they showed was not possible given the drive train setup. He would have required a mongo chain ring (like, 60+), and an itty bitty wittle cog on the casset. Plus, he would be spinning at about 110 rpm. In the movie, the bike he had had something like 55-13. There, he would run out of gears at around 35 mph. And, in the movie, he was spinning at about 70 rpm.

Yes, it is possible, even without the semi. However, the movie is FALSE!!!

Aside from WR's fun with dump trucks, if you search the forum for "speed" or "fast" you will probably find that many people have gone over 50mph downhill...

In my infrequent motorpacing sessions, drafting at 40+ isn't too hard.

Coming around the car when my mother hits the horn, on the other hand, is not so fun.

I've hit 40 in a sprint on flat ground (there may have been a tailwind...), and pros can hit more like 45+. Eliminate all that drag and you probably don't need very many watts to hit over 50 with a good enough draft.

The nerd quotient is often very high among cyclists. Especially cyclists who post on internet forums. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Great movie that came out as I was a kid just getting into cycling and "Breaking Away" in life...

The flaw in the movie is the switch in the first scene from a shot in his big ring to a shot in his small ring...

And he was going 60 mph not 50 mph....

Wiki: "Charles Minthorn Murphy (Oct, 1870 – Feb 16, 1950), but more popularly known as "Mile-a-Minute" Murphy, was an American cycling star from the late 19th century and early 20th century. His greatest claim to fame was being the first man ever to ride a bicycle for one mile in less than a minute in 1899."

This was done under a shield mounted behind a train. Nearly got killed. Others did die attempting similar stunts.

My friend, who was the manager of the old Bikecology bike store in Santa Monica, invited me to a preview showing of Breaking Away, at the 20th Century Fox studio. Everyone at the showing was connected and/or interested in some way with bicycling.

When the film ended - to wild applause - my friend and I agreed it was a terrific film. We thought, though, that it wouldn't be commercially successful, at least in the U.S., because we doubted there were enough people interested in cycling. We were wrong, of course, because the movie, touching on some universal themes, was so much more than about riding/racing bikes.

While movie was embraced by the public at large, knowledgeable cyclists have enjoyed finding all sorts of "mistakes," such as the goof with the chainrings, mentioned above, or the movie poster which flipped the pic of Dave on his bike, putting his drive train was on the left side of his bike, etc.

In the shots taken from a distance of the truck and bike they were actually going 58 mph using a professional bike racer. In some of the scenes of just the pedaling you'll notice much more muscular legs on Dave.

That pic was taken during her steroid days.

Now that she's off the juice she looks more human:

It is easily attainable.. Your biggest issue when going that fast is spinning out in your biggest gear..

John Howard did 150 mph or so at the salt flats a couple of decades ago. I did 52 down a hill yesterday just coasting.

At 55 mph, a 53/12 gear requires doing 160 cadence. I've never watched the movie, but I've been told the cyclist is doing more like 60 rpm in that scene. Did they do the 6 Million Dollar Man sound effects?

I told my wife the movie about cycling was on, she said it wasn't about cycling at all, it was about coming of age, yada yada. I had to explain to her what "breaking away" meant.

It gets worse with musicians. I never understood why they rarely hire musicians to play musicians when the band is essentially wallpaper to the scene. An actor faking on an instrument stands out like a cyclist putting their helmet on backwards.

That is a cool scene in the film, not 100% real, but still closer than some other scenes. Like when the little guy grabs the bike from the big guy and continues the race - clearly barely able to reach the pedals.
