Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How was the ride? I'm hoping to ride in it next year. I'm really just wanting to ride it and finish it, not really interested in a all out race or anything. Is it a laid back group?

No doubt, I only opened this after reading the blurb in the hopes that there were pics of both the gruppo and the boothgirl.

Which booth? I was there and only nice stuff I saw was decked out 595 + SRAM Red and CX-1 + SRAM Red. How the hell did I miss a Campy booth?!

With almost 12000 people rolling out you will get ALL kinds on the road. Fast, slow, fat, skinny, tandems, recumbs, TT'ers...even mtb's. The only thing you need to be prepared for is a) going your pace and latching to packs that roll at your speed and b) the heat...it's hotter than hell.

PARTIAL pic of the rollout...that's from about 10yds off the front (I know since that's my VERY tall buddy on the left with his back to the cam).

I can only imagine what might be on a John Water's Christmas album. That would be one to look for.

Why is everyone holding their ears?

And holy crap, eventually all those people started riding bikes in the same direction?? That's insane.

We are about 20ft from a giant cannon that was about to be fired. National Anthem, Air Force flyover, cannon blast and then rollout!

Yep...pros rollout up ahead...then recumbents...then the start line where we were followed by about 11,000 more people! It seems that many people bypass the rollout by just hitting the route prior to start but I felt that was part of the whole experience. Supposedly the largest organized ride in the US...not sure what the largest in the world may be but 11,600 is plenty large.

No pics, didn't get to try out either the grupo or the babe. Ride was great, finished the 100(actually) 102 in 4h29min58sec. new personal best. the booth wasn't really a campy booth, it was one of the lbs shops stationed along the east wall of the mpec right next to the hall. Finished the weekend off by riding up mt scott in oklahoma, wichita mts, 1000 ft of elev in 2.4 mi.
