2009 Roubaix s-works with Campy Super Record: DAMN!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2009 Roubaix s-works with Campy Super Record: DAMN!

I just talked with my LBS who mentionned that the asking price for this monster will be about 11 000$.

Man, are they really expecting people to pay this price?

I was going to buy a Roubaix but the lack of being able to customize it like I want it has swayed me elsewhere. I want it with SRAM Red, but I dont want the Mavic R-Sys wheels.. I also dont want to buy a module and build it up... I want an off the shelf bike. When I talked to the LBS about not wanting the R-Sys wheels, their reply was "Well, you can always sell them".. right.. Im going to buy a $7000 bike and drop another grand on wheels and have a set just laying around.

Specializes lack of love for SRAM cost them a sale.. not that Im sure they care. You either get a low end Roubaix with Rival or the very top of the line with Red.. no middleground.

Nope. I know that wasn't directed at me but I live in your area. I think there's one an hour or so away from the Triangle.

Didn't the big price runups at the high-end come about because of Arm$trong?

That's ridiculous. I'm assuming that it's better for the LBS to sell a higher end bike than a lower end one - why didn't he follow his own advice and offer to switch them out for you and sell the R-Sys himself? Unorthodox, but a sale is a sale, right.

I have to say, I'm still incredulous at that price - and I like the Roubaix - but the 08 Roubaix Sworks SL SRAM was ~$7500 as the top of the range, so a jump of $3500 seems OTT.

This spring I built up an S-works Tarmac SL2 frame with campy record and it was 5k without wheels..(I had a set of Zipps) so that's 7K and if adding the 1800 more for super record it is only $8800...

I think you should find another LBS or are you getting 4000 wheels with that...

My LBS would of swap the wheels out for me or built the frame up the way I wanted which is what they did for me..

he told me the 2009 SR will be available only around november or december. You can preorder them.

I would still wait and see the exact price when they are readily available. I can't believe Specialized would go ahead with this price.

I called the only two Specialized dealers in the area that stock a lot of inventory and talked to them about getting a Roubaix. I would have even taken an 08 if I could have found one in my size. Even called 3MTA3's old employers.. they're the ones who told me to just sell the R-Sys wheels.

I havent had much luck with LBS's around here.. they know they're going to eventually sell the bikes they have so they're really not interested in accommodating the customer.

One of the shops tried to move me to a Tarmac because they had one of those in my size.

There is one more Specialized dealer I haven't called but they really dont keep much in stock. I'll probably try them tomorrow but right now Im leaning heavily towards an F4:13 buildup.. just trying to decide between Campy or SRAM.

$11k is crazy, but I'm sure they'll sell. Lots of doctors out there. Specialized is very good at what they do (marketing).

In general, I see the high end bike market growing exponentially. New dura-ace, super record, electronic shifting, many $5k framesets, etc. The profit margins are staggeringly high and idiots like us line up all day long to pay > $2k for groupsets with $35 in materials/engineering. Lots of room for competition. Are you listening, China?
