Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ok, so my fav LBS apparently does not have the correct tools for me to buy that would allow me to get my BB out. They did however tell me that for only about 5 to 10 bucks they could take it out for me... how nice! I already have my cranks off, I just want to take everything out and fix it NOW and not wait for shipment of an order to come here from park. DAMN nation.

I hope that is not the "Cromoly Death Click" before the frame explodes.

I just used a plumber's wrench with worn rag to get the drive side cup out.

Note: I was just out giving my new bike a thorough cleaning and decided to disassemble the cassette and clean the cogs. I had my whip and wrench all set for some wrassling when the cassette lock-ring simply spun off! It evidently was NOT tightened to 25 to 36 ft/lbs at the factory.

I hope this clears up some noise I was getting in my drivetrain while climbing...

Yeah, pipe wrench will get you going. You can use it for the lockring too. Just try not to mar anything. Clean all the threads out with mineral spirits and a toothbrush. Re-grease, and assemble.

Make sure pedal threads are greased as well.

This creak will go away.

do this....10$ it's just that the bb/shell threads are dry and need grease.

I will have to try the wrench and rag idea. I know that I probably sound like a total noob, but if there is something wrong with my bb, how do I go about buying a new one?? I know where to look, but how do I know what to get? Thanks for any help!

Eliminated clicking

I had a similar ticking noise that seemed to be coming from the pedal/crank area or chain. I changed the chain and still had the noise. Then I noticed that when I stood out of the saddle the noise disappeared. I removed the saddle and post, cleaned the post, turned the post and saddle upside down and with a light oil lubed all of the rail to saddle connections. I left it that way overnight, reinstalled the post and saddle and have not had any ticking/clicking in weeks.

Hope this helps someone.

I had a loose bolt on my saddle, the clicking drove me nuts. I thought it was pedals or BB. On a fast downhill the bolt fell out and the clicking went away. Its a good thing my seat post had two bolts!

As I stated, the clicking happens WORSE when I'm out of the saddle. That being said it lasts maybe a full rotation and then is gone until I am back in the saddle and then it clicks for a full rotation and is fine again. I'm heading to the lbs today to see what kind of tools and prices I can find so I dont have to wait for a damn bb tool.

***UPDATE***

SO I took my Trek 1400 into my favorite LBS. They took out the bb, checked it out said it was fine surprisingly. They then checked out the crank arms and bolts. They found that the left is becoming slightly rounded. They tightened them down as tight as they could and BAM, no more clicking. They told me if the sound comes back they know what it is and how to fix. However, eventually they said I will need to replace things. Also they found a crack in my rear wheel and I will have to replace that too... sad news. BUT after all is said and done, it cost 10 bucks.... not bad at all! Now time to RIDE!!!
