Should We Form a Club?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should We Form a Club?

I got hit by a car today about 2 hours into a 2 1/2 hour ride, and ended up spending the next five hours in the emergency room, most of that time strapped in a neck brace. I'm pretty banged up, but I'm afraid my new bike is toast. The only consolation I have is that everyone who witnessed the accident (and there were a lot of them) told the cop on the scene it was definitely the driver's fault. It clearly was, too. I was on a main road, and he was on a side street at a stop sign. He somehow didn't see me (I'm 6'4", was wearing a bright white and yellow kit, riding a yellow and orange bike, and it was a cloudless day at noon!) and pulled out and hit me.

I know some people have had bad experiences with the police on the scene, who seem to think it's automatically the cyclist's fault. The cop at my crash, though, was really cool about everything, and he assured me several times that he would make sure my bike would be safe at the PD while I was at the hospital.

How many of you have been hit by a car? How did it turn out for you? Should we start a club for car crash survivors? Maybe design a little logo for our jerseys the same way past world champs have the rainbow stripes on their sleeves?

I'm also thinking maybe little car logos that we could paste to our top tubes like the "kill" decals on fighter planes.

We should make those magnetic ribbon things you see on everyone's cars now. They used to be just for "support the troops", but in the last month I have seen "Autism awareness", "breast cancer survivor", and my favorite "Celebrate road head".

Ours could say "Bike vs. Car survivor"

Where would we put them?

I don't have a car, and I'm not putting a piece of anything on any of my rigs, unless it's lighter than what I have on there now, or is more aero than what I have on there now.

Ouch. Bummer about the bike. Was it a low speed crash or did you go flying?
