Over the top sitaution in W&OD trail

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Over the top sitaution in W&OD trail

The over top situation happened with my co-worker couples days ago.
So he was riding bike from work to home, but it was just after dusk. He was late coming back to home.
So the cop was sitting right on trail waiting for guys like him. The cop stopped him and told him that the park closed after sunset and gave to him for first time offense a warning.(illegal transparent property).
Anyway my point, do you think the cop have better thing to do, then sitting on trail?
Is it ok that our taxes goes to catch a biker, then instant catching drug dealers or ...?
What a lazy p...k

That's not over the top dude. Cop was right - and, just a warning - no big deal. Should he be out catching some real criminals? Maybe. Or maybe he is protecting your friend from some real criminals. For example, a guy in my old building was dragged from his bike and strangled to death on the Mt. Vernon Trail a couple of years ago.

Where on the W&OD?

Also, most of those parks have signs posted that they close a half hour after sunset. If he was after that time there are usually plenty of alternative routes. Not that I'm saying it's a good use of police enforcement resources.

There have been several violent incidents on trails in VA over the last few years. Maybe this is just a reaction to that? I do think its petty.

I use those trails quite a bit in the early mornings. It's the only way I can get miles in most mornings. I hope this isn't a long term issue. I might have to contact WABA and see what they say.

What about commuters? Seems petty and probably an ass cop, not an enforcement campaign. If they are concerned about crime on the bike path they should be out there patrolling, not targeting, IMO

Cops enforcing the laws... What is the problem?

Next week the cop will be on a speed trap, then the week after that sitting at a stop sign.

It's the life of a traffic cop.

If you don't like the law/rule, then challenge the law, don't gripe about the cop sent to enforce it. Trust me, someone doesn't spend weeks getting harrassed in the police academy in order to give warnings at the bike path, they want to be out fighting real crime. He/she was just doing the job assigned.

8 of my 12 mile ride to work is on the W&OD/Custis. I've been commuting for 2+ years, and it would suck if they actually enforced the "park closes at dark" rule...
Some days the ride to and from work are the only thing that get me through the work day.

Wait, seriously? This is my first year commuting on the W&OD and if I can't ride after sunset, then I'm pretty f****d...

No worries son. They'll hassle everyone for awhile, then go away. To much of an expense.

you're over the top... guy got a warning... and you make this post.
Now if he got a 3-digit ticket for it, then that would be over the top.

I used to commute that way, and I thought the signs said "park closed at dark except commuters" or something like that. Or is that only the Mt Vernon/Custis trails?

if I'm reading you right, you're referring to the assaults. Is this still a significant concern? What's the incident rate nowadays (per day/week/month/whatever)?

i cant remember if they caught the guy or not but it "seemed" like women were getting assaulted at least once a month for a while. i havent been following the story much.

The cop was being very reasonable. It's the law that strikes me as exceptionally stupid. The entire WO&D Trail shouldn't be off limits to pre-dawn and post-dusk commuters because of the bad guys. That's how the bad guys WIN. Duh.

First time warning then second ticket, then impounded bike.
I have started this thread because I want to warning people about it. I have no idea you can get ticket for riding bike in dark time of the day. Also i'm understanding police concern about crime on trail, but they should find better way to fight a crime on trail. Soon will be dark at 7 pm so what to do?
The W&OD trail is only one way to avoid crazy drivers in Reston-Leesburg area. Also the riding a bike on trail after dark more safe then riding on road at dark time.

Cop was being unreasonable, but yes, the law is stupid. I sat in traffic court a couple years ago, and listened to a cop testify that he ticketed a woman who stopped at a stop sign, but she only stopped for two seconds instead of three. That kind of unreasonable.

You are right, the bad guy wins in this situation.

Actually, soon it will be dark at 5 PM. So nobody is allowed to commute home after work between September and April, or whenver daylight savings time begins and ends...?

cops in VA sucks Arsss... they should be worried about other stuff than being bothering the people who actually its paying their coffee and donuts.

I understand he was giving warnings but as somebody said, he might be better doing something. Well actually at least they guy was doing something else besides TALKING ON HIS CELL??? (sad but true)

Dunno, traffic sucks and now they are going to start pissing off in the trail? Better start getting something else to do because every day its getting harder to be a cyclist in VA.
