Do tubes just pop sometimes??
 

I've ridden for thousands of miles and never had a flat. Today doing a 33 mile fun ride with my wife after mile 30 I noticed I was going flat. This of course is on my new Conti GP4000-S tires with about 100 miles on them. I limped it in with CO2 walking the last 1/4 mile. I found no mark on the tire...I did though hit a slight pothole while taking a turn..nothin big railroad tracks were bigger.. So do sometimes just the tube pops???? Without anythin going through the tire??

sometimes you can ruin the valve. i ruined a tube once filling it up as the gas station pump. i think what happened is that the rim cut the rubber (schrader valve), causing it to leak.

if you're running on old old tubes, maybe the rubber had simply worn out? haven't experienced it, though.

You know my bike is a 07 trek that I bough new 4 months ago so the tubes may have been pumped up and down a lot and may be up to two years old. I got a new pump and I'm not sure I trust the gauge is what I'm thinking. The tire is hard as a brick at 90 psi according to it.

If a tube is defective, you should find out in the first few hours of use.

If it leaks later, you should carefully figure out why before riding again. Find the hole in your tube and then look for corresponding problems in your wheel or tire. Sometimes a sharp rock or piece of glass will pierce your tire, but then fall off. More often, the problem will remain in your tire or rim until you fix it.

Seriously, though, it could be alot of things. Too many to list here. Take the tube out, pump it up, and find where the leak is, and if you find the leak and can't figure out what went wrong, post your findings here and see if anyone can help. Tubes don't typically just spontaneously die.

Ok...I'm sitting here inspecting the tire and finally I found the cut/puncture. Darn..these are new tires, I bought because I though they were pretty descent for durability, if my luck is that bad maybe I should go to the gatorskins.

Your tire woes don't even approach what I've been through this year.
A pair of S-Works Roubaix's that came stock on my bike - punctured both within 400 miles - LBS tells me no road hazzard warrenty on tires.
Replaced with S-Works Mondos - $120, 3 rides and I punctured my front tire, the LBS gave me a replacement at cost $30
6 blowouts between the front and rear with no apparent reason - the shop kept telling me I was pinching the tubes, so I had them install replacement tubes with the same result. And then I found this:

But the bike shop told me there wasn't a known defect.

Yesterday I cracked and plunked down another $100 for Michelin Pro Race 3's
Tires and tubes are at about $300 for the year.

Last year I got 1700 miles out of a pair of Pro Race 2's with only 2 flats.
Go figure.

you'll have that. Sometimes you just have bad luck. The only time I ever punctured a tire with a thorn, I punctured both of them. Bad luck got to land on someone. I'd just replace/patch the tube. If it becomes a recurring problem then consider gatorskins or something.

I had a latex tube pop within the first 75 yards of installation once; obviously I didn't align it correctly.

Wierd stuff just happens sometimes. If the tube was old, I'd just chalk it up to an old tube, and go spend $5 or whatever on a new one and go about my business. If you have recurring problems, then it's something to get worried about.

A buddy blew out his rear tube once and we couldn't find anything wrong (no puncture, no bumps, wheel was fine, etc. The only thing we figured was that it was in the high 90's and we were riding across some pretty new blacktop that was probably significantly hotter than the air temp. We figured maybe his tire heated up enough that it increased the air pressure in his tube enough to make if fail. Can't confirm that this was the cause, but it sounded good at the time.

Sometimes you just have bad luck with flats. One time I had two flats on the same ride, neither of which involved a tire puncture. One did involve operator error, though.:o

Glass is sharp. Had Nine Cuts in my rear tire on a 75 mile ride last week.

Sidewall separated from the kevlar bead on my new tire - caused three flats in two rides before I figured it out. Food for thought.
