Going to Attempt a Century tomorrow.. * DID IT!!!*
For the past few months, I have been ramping up my millage. I started waking up earlier just to go ride an hour in the morning before work.
Last weekend I finished 74 miles and loved every second of it. ive cleaned and Lubed the bike. Will adjust the tire pressure tomorrow. I just finished eating 3 pounds of pasta plain.. just straight pasta.. yum! (salted it some) I will be carrying 4 water bottles with me, and plan on filling up once mid way. I will be using HEED as my main source of drink. I am packing 2 banana's and a bunch of these apple cinnamon oatmeal on the go They are 290 cal's each, with huge carbs and vitamins. Also throwing in two snicker bars, incase i just need a "fill me up" feeling at my rest stops. I was wondering if you guys had any other possible last min tips to prep me for the adventure at hand. * EDIT! 100.3 miles completed... still cant believe i made it... but none the less im stoked i did.. Well worth my sundays time..* |
Don't forget to have a good time.

If you can "love every second" of a 74 mile ride, you'll have no problems doing 100.
Four water bottles? How are you carrying four bottles? It sure seems you're carrying an awful lot of stuff, but I guess it depends on how many stores, etc. are along your route. Whereabouts is your ride? |
You're taking Snickers bars with you?? Won't they become one large gooey mess??
Oh yea, have fun! |
Stand up to pedal when your butt tells you.
Have fun. Go Slow. That last 10 miles is tuff. |
You're gonna get fat!!:)
|
Be sure to go to the bathroom at the beginning of the day. If you just ate 3 lbs of pasta, you really don't need that to be passing through during the ride.
If this is an organized ride with scheduled rest stops, you can get by with 2 bottles. If you are self supporting and stopping halfway, consider putting heed in 2 bottles and water in the others just in case you get sick of the taste of heed. Since you will be stopping, I think it might not be a bad idea to carry much less food and get more of that at the halfway mark too. Since you are carrying food, don't mix the heed too strong -- otherwise, you won't be able to absorb the calories you ate and you can expect an upset stomach late in the ride. But no matter what you do, I think you'll be fine. |

74 and 100 are one in the same. enjoy the ride you should have no trouble at all. later.
|
start early when it's cool out....pace yourself, constantly hydrate and take it electrolytes/sodium...if you did 74 you will be fine....have fun!
|
You just ate 3 lbs of plain pasta?
|
Does the ride have organized stops? Usually they have more nutritious snacks available along the way. Take a camera and have some fun! Make sure you have at least two tubes. If you can do 74 miles, you will be fine. Where did you get your training program?
Good Luck! |
Sorry if this is a stupid question to ask: Are you doing this solo or with a group?
|
Good luck!
Mine's (the Tsuru Tsycling Tsentury!) is coming up next month!!! |

This is simply a Solo goal of mine. Just planned a 100 miles as a goal when I first started biking a few months ago.
Ill be going at it alone as like many things in life. A self victory if you will. Granted, I started biking because it was the only thing that didnt agrivate my back. (Long story) I have since lost 55 pounds, and slowly been increasing my mileage and riding just to ride. So I plan on being on the bike and rolling 7:30 am at the latest, and Im still debating the snickers with the heat.. but figure if i get them in the early few hours, it will be a nice fill me up feeling and kinda a dirty pleasure lol. And yes i just ate 3 pounds of pasta... I really cant believe I did, i made 3 just so id have food for dinner tomorrow and didn't stop eating :/ Ive just hydrated well... So its time to sleep and wait for tomorrow to come |
On solo long rides I visit convenience stores along the way. I can't stand carrying everything at once and quite frankly I need the break. Plus convenience stores around here tend to carry things like energy bars. No fresh fruit :(
Another fun one is to hit a smoothie restaurant like jamba juice in the middle of the ride. yummy |
Yeah I'm looking forward to the Buffalo in about two weeks. Good luck!

A solo century is a great accomplishment. It sounds like you have it planned it well. Take a cell phone and let some know your route and expected return time.

Did It~!
|
Congrats! Well done -- how was the ride?
|
congrats!!....what where the specifics??
|
the ride was good, I was joined in the first 40 by a neighbor training for a triathalon so I got to look at a hot piece of ass for 40 miles =)
I then turned it down to nice and easy mode and set in for the long haul. 9 hours total. took an hour of breaks so 8 hours of riding. I maintained about a 12 mph average throughout the entire trip, which was the hardest part, I always want to go faster, so it was hard turning myself down to make sure I lasted the day. I didn't bring my camera, As i really didn't see myself carrying it all day knowing i was going to be pushing the limits. |
