Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

She HTFU

Hancock Horizontal Hundred
Average speed: 19.1 mph
Ride time: 5 hours, 19 minutes.
Total time: 5 hours, 58 minutes
Terrain: mostly flat
Wind: West 5-15mph
Conditions: Light rain for the first hour or so, dry the rest of the day.
Best part: Long stretch of the old Lincoln Highway with a nice tailwind.
Worst part: Mile 73-85 into a sucky headwind

Gripes: 0
Complaints: 0
Requests to slow down: 0
Wasted time at feed stops: minimal

This was Cheri's first full century since her foot surgery last fall. At the 73 mile feed stop our average was right at 20mph. While a less painful foot, a lot of training miles behind her and me (Mr. Windbreak) in front of her definitely contributed, I think all of the compliments she got on her pink clothing and bike bits is what really gave her the energy to not only keep up, but to finish strong!

When I saw "She", I thought this was going to be a Pcad style third person rant.
Helluva 1st century.

She was sooo happy with herself. Not only did she keep up, she never once complained - even when I picked up the pace over the last 15 miles to try to get us in under 6 hours total.

You were part of her inspiration, Beth...she was really impressed with you last August.
Look out at Lancaster next year...she's gonna put us all in a spot of bother!

Good job!

But... but... all I've read (mostly from pcad) is how you're too fat for this sport. How did you manage pulling most of the time AND averaging almost 20mph??? All I've ever known has turned upside down now.

Cherie was behind whipping him. It would have been reported to the authorities, but he kind of likes it...

Well done! Glad she's made it back from the foot injury.

I'm enormously envious of you guys who have a wife that rides. At least mine always wants me to go for as long of a ride as I can all time. Not really sure what that means.............

Congrats to the you of two. Thank your lucky stars that your wife likes to ride like that. Next year she'll take more pulls and the two of you will average 21+mph!

No way, Fred. The thing I didn't mention is that I was trying to drop her because she wouldn't stop yakking...it's bad enough to be so fat and slow that I can no longer drop a yakking female, it would be plumb crazy to buy a bike where she is attached to my six permanently!

Haven't you noticed? pcad seems to have a special fondness for Chip; I think the comments he makes are part of his denial.

Beth

PS I'll look forward to riding with you guys again next year - without the rain!

I'm getting my husband out on the road now. Love him to bits, but there's no way in heLL we could ride a tandem together. First, I'd have to be in front. Second, for sure he'd be doing something wrong (IMHO). We'd be picking at each other the whole time. At least when we're out on separate bikes I can ride away (i.e. drop him ) before I say something I shouldn't.
