Your preferred time to ride
If all extraneous factors were taken out of play, what would be your preferred time to ride? If you are into the group-ride-bike-orgy thing, you get to decree when the ride starts.

7:00 in the morning. Cool, crisp air, never too hot... even in summer. Watch the sunrise. Ride for 5 hours and still have a day left (after the post-ride nap of course).

30 minutes after breakfast which is the same as 30 minuters after sunrise. it is just so darn calm and quit at that time. something we dont get a lot of here in the windy city burbs. later.

I usually head out around 9:30 or 10:00 for approx. 30 miles 4 to 5 times a week. That way, morning traffic has calmed and it is hot out, but not too hot.

Are cars extraneous factors?
Here in the DC area, I usually do my weekend rides around 7am to cut down on the number of caffeine deprived soccer-mom-mobiles driving like morons, headed out for their first starbucks of the day.

Mine's been changing on a whim lately, but the last few rides have been 6am, 5am, 5:30am, 4:30am, and 5am. I'm in school till midnight, so I usually just browse around on the forums and interwebs till I see the sun just barely starting to provide light, and I head out. Too much traffic for me to try and ride any later. Not to mention it's just too warm outside still to ride anytime after 10am. Give it another month or so and we'll talk about pushing the hours ahead

I'm up at 6:00 AM, done with a bowl of cereal and more importantly, coffee, by 6:45, and out the door by 7:00 for 1-3 hours. Come home, work, and if I'm feeling saucy and if a teammate or friend comes a'callin', I'll do another ride in the evening.
I hate riding in the afternoon –*I'm always dragging butt from 1-4, unless I do some espresso shots or something.

Don't mince words
In summer I like to be on the road by 6 am. It's cool, clear, low traffic, lots of wildlife.
In winter 9 or later, after it warms up a little.
The group rides at 5-6 pm during the summer are the hardest for me, mentally. It's hot and my energy is low. I do them because it builds character.

I like it very early in the morning. Go out just with enough light out that I do not need lights on the bike. The earlier the better. I never eat breakfast before riding either, so that is not a choice for me. This is getting all other external factors like traffic, heat, wind, rain, family obligations, work, call, etc.

10 AM is the earliest I will ride unless I'm with a group, as I love my sleepy sleepy. My favorite time is night, especially in the summertime.
