Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm curious about this because I've gotten around a similar situation on campus as far as allowing bikes into certain buildings.

I throw my road bike on my shoulder like I'm running a CX race. They tend to get confused when the wheels are not touching the ground.

So I suppose they should ban all other things that might possibly fit in a hallway too.

I know you live in the nicer area, and I don't know if cars ever get stolen from your neighborhood, but I know that in Compton or Inglewood, nobody cares about VIN numbers.

Also, some cities allow you to register the serial number of your bicycle. You might want to look into that with your nice bike. I would steal it if it was my size (j/k)

I think they should make fire codes clear to everybody and not just the architects and interior designers. As the husband of and ID, I know I have to keep a clear 36" run leading to my front door as well as the emergency exit in my classroom, and I inform my students of such as well.

Or, they could paint lines on the floor indicating where stuff goes. Claiming an object is a fire hazard because it could be placed in front of an emergency escape is stupid.

I too like to bring a bike on trips when I go by car, not specifically for bike events, but to tour around, and I certainly prefer to keep it in my room. On my last trip, to Philadelphia, the Loew's Hotel was incredibly friendly to that; I didn't ask ahead of time. I did though make a conscious decision to take my beater mountain bike rather than my road bike.

Frequently however, since I often travel by train, my strategy is just to rent a bike. Then I'm not so fussy about not keeping it in my room (sorry for the double negative). Actually I can't recall a hotel balking at the room option, but nearly always they will keep it in the luggage storage area. I'm a very early rider and there is always someone to open it up, though once they did have trouble finding the key. I give a tip as for any other stored item, and I usually make a friendly acquaintance with the night manager during my stay

The last hotel I was in on vacation last month I wheeled in my carbon Kuota Kredo from the parking lot and a hotel employee comes running after me and stops me as I get into the elevator. He then proceeds to drool all over my bike! He started telling me about the fixie he rides and how he's done with gears. But this is flatter than flat Cleveland, so I take it with a grain of salt.

Aside from that, if I'm paying for a room I'll be damned if they tell me I can't bring my bike in.

Can't speak for any issues with a hotel...
the crappy college housing (in a very small college town) would not let me store my bike indoors (I snuck it in sometimes anyway)... it was mostly ok becasuse at the time I owned a low-end schwinn mtb that I just commuted on. It was pretty funny because the carpet was dark brown, and had not been cleaned since 1987, I'm sure.

Probably the most important question I've asked since my college days (as I know own a nice bike) is "do you allow bikes in the unit". I have not encountered a single complex that has said no- most seem confused I even ask. I'm currently living somewhere new and somewhat posh with pristine white carpet- they could care less. People in minneapolis ride bikes, they get it.

I stayed in a few swank hotels, and all of them allowed bikes, as I called ahead.

Nonsense that they won't allow; I bet if you call again and get someone else, they'll probably say yes.

I may not be the best lawyer in the world, but I'm pretty confident I give my car or my bike to the Hotel, and I don't get it back in the same condition, I have recourse. And I think the Ritz is good for the money in either the bike or the car's case.
Um yeah, good luck with that.

A couple years ago in South Beach. the hotel valet totaled a mustang convertible. The hotel had conveniently outsourced the valet services to another company, which conveniently disappeared shortly after the incident. Recourse my ass. I had to submit it to my own insurance.

Come on down just south of Cleveland to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park...I'll show you a good climbing time in and out of the valley. Gotta warn you though, I am fat, slow wussy.

Cleveland has turned into the capital of Wussyville, even the messengers are riding on the sidewalks and the wannabe hipsters think riding up into downtown from the flats is a major climb.

I know you're just being a drama queen to make a point, but yes, to a point that's true. People started getting lax about stacking boxes in halls, letting water bottles for the water cooler impinge, etc. Some of that was due to us being in too small of a building (and we've since moved). Some of it is due to us having very equitable hiring practices and having more than a few employees in wheelchairs or on crutches.

The problem with leaving things like this up to 'judgment calls' you always get some selfish yahoo who crosses the line, and when told to change, says 'you let everyone else do what they want, see, I'm not the only one, you're picking on me' and drama ensues. In a small company, it can be dealt with but above a certain size it gets unmanageable.

I wish it were different but the behavior of our cyclists in our bike corral even proves the point. I'd say over half the bikes in there haven't been ridden in over six months. They gather dust and block spots that make it hard for other cyclists (like myself) to use it as intended.

there was a bmx race or convention or something in reno the other week. i was staying at the grand seria, i didn't see a single bmx bike locked up outside, saw some in trailers, but most of the kids just brought them inside to there hotel rooms wearing there mtb shoes/cleats. ages was 8-16. considering the US presiset stayed at this hotel not long ago i don't think hotels should be so pretencious about road bikes in their rooms. arn't they supose to accomate to your needs?

Exactly. If merlinextraligh is an attorney that he must know the difference between winning a judgement & actually collecting on it (assuming you can identify the party to pursue).

To play the devil's advocate... he WAS talking about hotels that provide THEIR OWN valets as opposed to those who outsource it to external companies. In that case the offending party is clear, the hotel.

Too much of a hassle... we want to be able to roll it right in and roll it right out when we need to.

First of all don't ask,, just bring it in.

If you get confronted and they suggest putting your bike in the luggage room (most hotels have them) go for it if you have a beater bike. If you have a slammin TT/tri or carbon bike, you look the guy in the eye, and (embellish if necessary) ask, "can you guarantee that my $5,000$ bike will not get damaged in that room?" That person will choke.. they don't want that responsibility.

Then if they still insist and it comes down to having to leave. You get stern, and demand that they book you a hotel room of comparable quality and price in a nearby location and assist you in getting there. Hotels are about service, and if they wont' budge on policy then the least they can do for inconveniencing you is to give you some service. And always go to the top.

There's a good chance by this point they'll just get lazy and let you take it into the room.

Didn't know you couldn't bring a bike into the room. Never asked, just did it.
