Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Whats with you guys and saddles?

I have never replaced a stock saddle for another one on any of my bikes. On my mountain bike I have a stock WTB saddle and on my road bike I have one that came with it. Why are you guys spending so much money on saddles? For me at least, all of them are fine!

I'm not too finicky about saddles, but not all of them feel the same after 8 hrs of riding.

True, I spend max 5 hours on the bike and I'm out of saddle 1/2 the time.

Is your road bike a Trek or LeMond, with the patented Bontrager Asshatchet© Saddle? An hour on one of these babies will answer your question.

I wish i could say this about saddles and my wife wish i could to, but i have never had this luxury. The cost does not make them better i have tried several saddles over a $100.00 plus and now back to a Forte TS-1 its light, good rails , cost is great less than $40.00 on sale , it is up to a century even when i am not and does not look to bad on my cannondale. My wife rides a Specialized Bg saddle her second one of these last one went 7000 miles and this one already has 3400 miles on it this year she wouldn't change for anything.

I always have to chuck the stock saddle... the bikes I buy come with men's saddles.
It's like sitting on a 2x4.

I rode my stock Felt saddle for 1500 miles before changing it, mostly because I wanted a white one.

It's now seeing service on my cross bike

I ride a Sekine bike. Good news about it: I haven't been riding it for the past few months because I totalled the rear wheel with rough city and dirt riding, and I just bought a aluminum QR one for $5!

Back in the good ol' days, Treks came with quality saddles. I'm still riding the Selle Italia Flite Ti that came stock on my '00 5200, albeit on a different bike.

I'm with you. I use whatever's already on the bike. Replacing a saddle would be like replacing a car seat to me: not even on the radar.

Perceived comfort. It's my posterior on the bike, why not change it and feet good about my bike? I love my Brooks, heavy but then again, I'm a clyde so ...

My tandem partner/wife put 30,000+ miles on a Brooks B-72 saddle before she broke one of the saddle rails. Yup, she's a tough little cookie!
She currently rides a Serfas Cosmos on our tandem and pilot rides a Selle Italia Flite-ti. Currently 22,000+ miles on those saddles.

If the bike you bought comes with a saddle that suits your buns that's just fine.
If you ride max only 5 hours and you're off the saddle half that time, that says something about butt discomfort!

I would like a Brooks saddle, though I am not sure if it will make a difference, because my saddle is fine, but first I need to make sure my u-lock isn't touching the seat, as the brooks molds to you.

Most stock saddles are too wide for me. I ride a 135 mm width saddle.

There's your answer. For me, it's about the 5 hour point when the wrong saddle starts to bother me. After about seven hours it's hell. For a century, I can ride about any saddle and tough it out. Back to back long rides, and the next day is tough, however.

Why are you out of the saddle so much?

Well, if I'm on the mountain bike there is a lot of uphill portions. When I am on the road bike I am trying to go faster, and I feel if I sit down a lot, my lock will go out of my pocket. So I stand most of the time.

Good for you, but I can only dream of being so casual about my saddles. I am very, very sensitive to saddle choice. It's been extremely difficult for me to find one that even works acceptably well (Specialized Alias, btw). It's not about vanity, it's about comfort.

Saddles are very personal and depend greatly on riding style. If you are a rider that rides very aggressively, then you won't be putting much weight on the saddle and what is there won't matter that much. In that case you might as well go totally weight weenie. If, on the other hand, you are more of a rider that is taking a slow spin and smelling all of the flowers, then you are using the saddle as a seat. In that case things are very different.

As for me I have two road bikes and on one is a Fizik Arione and on the other is a 135 g SLR. They work very well for the kind of riding I do and I have ridden both on 200 km rides without complaint. If I was training for PBP, however, I would be sporting a Brooks Pro. The Brooks Pro is quite similar to the Arione in geometry, but it will custom fit the rider at the cost of a severe weight penalty. For extremely long distance riding saddle comfort becomes very important.

Not to sound to gay, but I'm totally jealous of your butt.
My rear end is sooooo particular about what it sits on.
