I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. I think I'll do both.

theyre from walmart, my cousin has one. does about 70 miles a week on one. fwiw its worth it hasnt given him any problems, but its as heavy as tank and grip shifters on a road bike is a horrendous idea. the brakes are spooky as well. the mountain bike gearing means you can at least get the heap up hills spinning 90 rpm at 6 miles an hour.

caloso 09-15-08 08:54 PM

Can somebody explain how you'd install grip shifters on a drop bar without cutting it in half at the stem?

Banzai 09-15-08 08:57 PM

Can Cervelo sue over that?

roccobike 09-15-08 08:58 PM

$510 with shipping. Hmmmm, in most places you can do one heckofalot better on CL, no problem.

Initial thoughts:

It is a nice looking bike and since road bikes are pretty much only sold in bike shops, most people will assume it cost a LOT more than it really did. A friend asked if I spent "over $1,000" on it.

I have no problems with build quality. The welds look good, the bike seems solid, the seat tube fit fine. I was surprised how well the frame fits my 6'0" size.

The Good Things:

> Nice looking bike

> Could pass for a much more expensive bike

> Lightweight (interjection: It weighs 29 lbs!!!!)

> Great gears, I hit 38.5mph on a downhill with some gear remaining, and managed 32.4mph on level ground with a tailwind (measured using handlebar mounted GPS receiver). I can cruise overall in the 16-20mph range for the first hour.

> Seat post clamps down nicely and is plenty long enough

The Bad Things:

> Seat angle does not appear to be adjustable and since I am male I will have to purchase an adjustable seat due to the high front angle

> No top pull brake levers, have to move hands into the drops in order to operate brakes

> Brakes are marginally effective, I've had cheaper toy bikes with better brakes. Am going to try different pads.

> To reach higher gears, the left gripshift turns toward you, but the right gripshift turns away from you.

Hahahahaha. Brilliant. I'm impressed.

They are cut in half at the stem!!!! My LBS had to work on the grip shifters for one of the Denalis last year...The bar is cut in half and bonded with glue in the middle underneath the steam away from the eyes of the public. Not very safe if you ask me.

As long as there are suckers in this world, there will always be people selling wal-mart bikes for outrageously inflated prices and try to pass it off as a high-end brand. Or else someone really just wants to look cool.

This is my favorite:

It's a very good looking bike, and it can definitely pass for a bike that cost 3x as much. I really enjoyed having this bike, however, there were a few disappointments.
After the 1st week, the tape on the steering wheel began to come off, later the shifters began to malfunction, the shifters are the ones where you have to turn up and down, not like the more expensive bikes where the shifter is made into the brakes. In addition to the shifter problems. when you want to go to higher gears you have to twist that cheap nob really hard so when you do that it feels like its going to break off.
Furthermore, the front derailleur would scratch against the chain making an annoying sound and damaging the chain at the same time. I spent 15 dollars on a tune up, which didn't fix the derailleur problem.
And finally, this is the reason to why i had to return this item, my front wheel could no longer hold air and the wheel itself cracked a little after i bumped into a peace of contrite sticking out on the road.

This guy titled his review "Nice Bike" and gave it 4 stars

Flatballer 09-15-08 09:35 PM

^LOL. The steering wheel... priceless. You can't write this stuff.

entukay 09-15-08 10:06 PM

Ahhhhh hahahahahahahaha

sac02 09-15-08 11:36 PM

OP, add a poll: Do you think this bike will sell?

Yes or No as the only options.

I've got it on my watch list, I'm curious if someone out there falls for it.

But did you call your (insert first cheap bike brand here) a Cervelo?

That's like driving a Hyundai but putting Porsche badges on it and telling people you own a Porsche.
