Is Trek Red Shield program worth getting on new Madone 5.2?
I'm new to road riding so I don't have a lot of experience replacing high mileage parts like cassettes and chain rings. I have the option to purchase the Trek Red Shield program for my new 5.2 but I don't know if it's a good idea or not. There is not much feedback on this forum about the program so I thought I would start a new thread. What are other Trek owners experience with the program? Is it easy to get parts replaced or is your LBS/Trek Dealer stingy? How many miles do you need to ride before it starts to pay off? Or should I just learn to replace and buy my own parts? Thanks!!!

how much extra is it? The frame has a lifetime warranty and the bontrager components have a 5 year warranty (I think). That leaves the shimano bits which are 1 year for regular and 3 year for Dura Ace.
And do you buy useless extended warranties on your electronics you buy at Best Buy?

From the website:
"Defects in materials or workmanship and breakdown due to certain normal wear and tear" (emphasis added). So it probably doesn't cover cogs or chains. What else wears out in 3-5 years?

It covers chains, cassettes, and other stuff. I can't remember cost off the top of my head, but I think I remember it working out in your favor if you burn through a few chains and a cassette every year. If you're a high mileage guy it might be a good idea.

If it covers cassettes and chains, and you put miles in, it might be worth it pending the cost.

LBS quoted $169 for the Five year coverage. It covers replacement from normal wear and tear on items such as the Cassette, Chain rings, chain, brake calipers and a number of other items.
Seems to me that if in five years, if you had to replace a chain or Cassette even once, it would pay for itself.

My ultegra cassette has close to 10k on it and I've burned through 3 10 speed chains in that amount of time. $20 each on PBK.

As stated earlier, if you plan on putting up 5k+ miles a year, you'll need to have your stuff replaced atleast annually, so go for it if you plan on that (which you should anyway at the very least )

I guess it is heavily dependent on the number of miles you put on the bike. I think I was quoted $189 for 5 years on a $3k bike. All movable parts are covered except for rubber like pads, wheels and tape, labor is included. In the long run I think I would like to lean to do my own work so I have less downtime but that is a different issue.

So I was at my lbs and the subject for the red shield comes up. He said he it includes labor, so what do you guys think is it worth it ? Any new info would be great too since this thread died in 2008. Btw I got quoted for 3 yrs for 105.00 or 5 yrs for 155.00.
I'm not getting a madone I'm getting a 2011 1.5

I have it on my 2.1. I haven't needed it too much so far but it's only been a year and a bit, so it just kicked in. It did cover some maintenance on my bottom bracket at my LBS, which saved me around $30 which was cool
