Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

'09 Six13????!!!!

I was just browsing the ’09 Cannondale site and it looks like the Six13 is GONE. The Six (which I assume was brought in to replace the Six13) has an aluminum toptube and downtube with carbon stays. It’s like some kind of ANTI-Six13!!!!!

They said the Six13 was better than other frames because it had the carbon fibre in the main triangle tubes instead of in the stays.

Now, the opposite is the word.

This makes me sad.

I was just observing on today's ride what a great all around bicycle my Six13 is. Much better ride than the Cervelo Soloist I'm getting. And the Six13 has such a great all around feel, which I'm sure is due to the right mix of alu and cf.

The sacrifices we make for speed. And in my case, it's utterly futile. Whatever.

This begs the question: then, why are you getting the Soloist (carbon, yes)? Lighter weight? Want an upgrade in components?

What annoys me is that Cannondale has always prided themselves with having race proven frames in their race lineup, and this year they just throw that away. Last year all their race frames had been professionally raced and that's not the case anymore. I think it made sense to streamline their inventory and production, but I wish the race proven frames bit was still the case.

I love my Six13. Carbon stays are stupid. Cannondale has disappointed me.

Are the new Six Carbon series not made in USA? The frame kind of looks like Scott CR1...

2006 c'dale six13 team 2, the best bike i have owned in over 40 years of cycling. i can't imagine anything better, but hey the manufacturer's have to put something in our minds so we buy new bikes i.e. newer and therefor better. i don't buy it. same with golf clubs and tennis racquets. i really believe that a professional rider could take my bike all the way in the tdf. yes i love my six13 and yes i too have thought about a supersix but then i ride my bike and i say why!

Well, I'm pretty happy I decided to get my 2008 Six13-1 before they quit making them. It was a split second "if I don't get this now I'll have to get a 2009" decision.

As an owner of an '07 Six13, I'm biased. It's a fantastic bike, and I can't imagine better. It started at the bottom of my candidate list, and smashed all the contenders in test rides.

By '08 the bike had changed. Geometry was different than standard Cannondale race, and the carbon sections were no longer made in Bedford. Plus, the bonding method was different.

Still, even if the bike had deviated from its original form, I believe competed very well with the overwhelming scads of carbon stay/alu main triangle bikes out there. Most of those bikes are simply marketing, and in many cases the cf is actually HEAVIER. The Six13 was not simply different, but it combined the best part of the CAAD 8/9 (the rear stays) with a CF front end to damp vibration.

Here's Banzai's conspiracy theory:

Prior to '09, the SuperSix was made in two pieces: the rear triangle and the main triangle, and those two were joined together in Bedford. One of the two was sourced to TopKey (who makes the CF Synapse) and the other, I believe, was made in Bedford.

Now the whole thing is made in Bedford, and all one piece. Nice and smooth, with no joining "lug".

I believe that Cannondale has a bunch of CF rear ends left over, or is still on the hook for a contract to buy more of these rear ends. So an elegant solution to the problem was to bond it to a Taiwanese made aluminum front end and market it as something great. Profits, and they get rid of the parts. In a couple of years I believe that we'll see this particular bike disappear, once this arrangement is no longer needed.

I think the Titus lawsuit has something to do with the end of the Six13. Cannondale overstepped on that one, I think it was settled out of court.

"Lindsay, a former executive at True Temper, said he first saw what he calls an “infringement” on a Cannondale bike while at the 2003 Tour de France. “Cannondale has been aware of our concerns for some time, so this did not come as a surprise to them,” he said.

What’s in dispute are the “windows” on Six 13 frames that show the mating of metal with carbon fiber in what Cannondale describes as a co-molding process.

VyaTek’s patent (U.S. Patent No. 6895006) was issued May 24, 2005. However, the technology has been in use since March 2002. "

A little of topic, But just I scored a 05 Six 13 on ebay last week for $330.00 (Went for $480 shipped, but I am selling the SI cranks to a buddy)... The frame is in amazing condition, and will be building it up this weekend with 08 Record...

I would have liked the 06 but being that it is the Team 1 version of the 05 with the Slice Premium + Fortk I am pretty happy with the deal I got. A buddy of mine who works at a shop in Delaware talked to the Local C-dale rep. and got the serial number switched over to my name for the warranty!

Will post pics after the build is complete. Here are some teasers:

ya i absolutely love my six 13. i ordered the bike with out ever riding it once. I rode a cadd 8 and thought it was harsh. the i rode a super six 3 and thought it was the most responsive lightest bike i have ridden. but being out of my price range i settled on the six13. I heard nothing but excellent things about it so i wasnt worried.

i did get an 07 frame even though i bought it in 08. but i guess thats what happens when you dont ride a production model of the bike
