Disreali Gears
Vintage rock & roll trivia with a road cycling connection and some British political history thrown in:
Just heard Howard Stern refer to a 60s album by Cream titled 'Disreali Gears'...
Disreali Gears?
I had heard of the British PM Disreali, but wondered how he got into the album name with 'Gears'...
Excerpt from the Wikipedia article:
The title of the album, Disraeli Gears, was actually a bit of an inside joke. Eric Clapton had been thinking of buying a racing bicycle, and was discussing it with Ginger Baker, when Mick Turner, one of the roadies, commented on the performance of "its got them Disraeli Gears" meaning to say "derailleur gears". The band thought this was hilarious, and decided that it should be the title of their next album. Had it not been for Mick, the album would simply have been entitled Cream.

God that's outstanding. Thanks for that anecdote. I've loved that album since I was a kid and I never knew the source of the title. I always thought it referred to Benjamin Disraeli, the Victorian Era British PM.

Don't know whether he still has them or not, but Clapton was once famous for his collection of Cinelli's

Technically, Cream were one of the best bands ever. Three of the most superb musicians. Its amazing how just one guitar a bass and drums were able to make so much music.
Disraeli Gears is the zenith of Eric Clapton.

Years ago (alright, decades ago) I recall reading an article about Cream and Clapton, or maybe it was Baker, said the band loved wordplay like "Disraeli Gears" and "Elephant Gerald" (for Ella Fitzgerald).
+1 on "Spoonful."

I really haven't heard much rock that I wanted to listen to since the mid 1990's, with one or two exceptions, most notably Third Eye Blind, who I consider to be one of the better guitar driven rock acts I've ever heard.

Because Rock is dead, just like Jazz after they handed it over to Manhattan Transfer and Kenny G. Stick a fork in it. That's why Eric Clapton now sounds like a refugee from the "Lifetime Network."

Guitar-driven rock is far from dead. It's just no longer in the mainstream and Top 40.

Randolph Family band rocks pretty hard. David Lindley still soars with the slide. There are others.
Disraeli Gears just stunned me. Cuts off of it still can - Strange Brew. Sunshine of your Love. Isaw Cream (one of the seemingly interminable string of "goodbye" tours they did) back in the early 70's. They deserved every allocade they received.

Boys, boys, rock and roll is alive and well. FM radio is no longer what it once was, and the music industry is ********, but your basic 3-chord rock and roll song is still being cranked out by great bands... You just have to look for it in different places, such as in local clubs, on WNCW 88.7 out of Spindale, North Carolina, on WUSC 90.5 (The Awesome Alternative) out of the University of South Carolina, and The Garage on Sirius...

Ok, the next time a door-to-door Encylopedia Britannica salesman comes by, I'll buy a set and look it up for you...

"Strange Brew" was Pete Brown's re-working of Lawdie Mama. Look it up.
It's on this collection. I had it but sold it. (Don't kill me.)

“You know how the title came about - Disraeli Gears - yeah? We had this Austin Westminster, and Mick Turner was one of the roadies who’d been with me a long time, and he was driving along and Eric (Clapton) was talking about getting a racing bicycle. Mick, driving, went ‘Oh yeah - Disraeli gears!’ meaning derailleur gears... We all just fell over... We said that’s got to be the album title”

How about 'Pressed Rat and Warthog'?, No, seriously, 'White Room' and 'Crossroads'.
Anybody hear the Jack Bruce album "Songs for a Taylor"?
