Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seacoast Century century.... man down!

I just finished my first century yesterday. 6 hrs 51 mins. The last 15 miles were hard, but I didn't bonk. The last 8 or so were cruel with a strong headwind off the ocean the just punished. I have never been in as much lactic acid pain as when I climbed down from that bike and put it on the rack. But at the finish I told the two 30 year olds I rode the last 90 miles with that I was 48 and they were stunned. They both said they thought I was maybe a few years older then them, so that made the pain worth it>

Anyway, this century is supposed to be a moderate paced ride as it goes through some smaller roads and towns. The website says if you want to race or are looking for a personal best time, please do not attend. So when team Cervello dusted us on a hill, we wondered.

As we rode through the York Beach strip we came upon a rider down in between two parked cars with what I think was an older man and a few of the rider's teammates hovering over. Then came the sirens shortly after. One of the guys I was riding with said he thought it was one of the fast guys we'd been seeing that day. Anyone know what happened to him? I'm thinking he got jammed by an open door at a pretty good clip.
