Really?
The only reason I'm posting here is that my original "I'm gone" post was deleted when a whole thread was deleted.
The "edge" has now been blunted on the Road Forum. This forum without an "edge" is like a no-drop group ride. While lots of folks like that kind of thing, it is not for me.
See ya later.

Has coddling tendencies.
So far in this thread I've read up to page 3, and the last page. It's been very interesting, informative and entertaining, and I'll be sure to read the rest. My take is as follows.
As you can see, I've been a member since 2005. I joined initially to inquire about issues relating to my former vintage bike. I found that forum sub-group to be a goldmine of information. Last summer my dear vintage was stolen, and as a replacement I decided to dive into the world of these new fangled road bikes. I was stunned at how little I knew about the world of bikes post 1975. And that's where the RC forum came in very handy. The advertisement links did their job and I ended up buying a bike from one of your sponsors. Every question I had about accessories, components, physical challenges, diet, and local-to-me resources were either answered by reading, searching or inquiring on the forums. Interest in local BF related rides followed. All in all, it has been a very satisfying experience.
Information aside, the rest of my BF experience falls into the categories of inspiration and entertainment, both of which are equally important to me. My work is in the entertainment business, and specifically the comedy world. For over 10 years now I've been enmeshed in, and at times overwhelmed by all things comedic. I mostly work with the cutting edge group of up and coming talent, many of whom have become staples on both small and big screens. The bottom line in the comedy world is that if it isn't funny, it isn't comedy. My personal and professional opinion is that the RC forum is oftentimes great comedic theater. (including this thread, btw)
When it comes to comedy, I don't hang out with just anybody. If anyone is inclined to being jaded and judgmental about humor, it would be me because it's my livelihood. That I don't immediately react in an overly defensive or judgemental way about those who participate here says quite a lot about them. That I can find such a high caliber of comedy and entertainment on BF is a testament to the quality of the people who regularly post here. That I often laugh hard at what I read (including simple one word responses) and see (can't leave out the classic image responses) is an even higher compliment. And in the midst of all that table slapping and cleaning my computer screen of sudden burst laugh spray, I continue to find plenty of information and inspiration on RC.
Something to think about: When someone enters a comedy club, they are expected to be entertained, oftentimes by being shocked from hearing material and topics that would be offensive and insulting outside of the club. The acts of Don Rickles, Richard Pryor and Sam Kinison come to mind. Anyone who becomes insulted when going to see Don Rickles clearly did not understand the rules of the game. In part, that would apply to some of what goes on in RC. Perhaps RC needs a "warning" sticky, and only some gentle moderation from time to time.
You (mods and admins) have a rare gem here on BF. I truly hope you find a way to resolve the behind the scenes issues and differences so that it doesn't harm or interfere with what has become so unique.

We have one. It's called "We're going to yell at you". It isn't an official sticky, but it's always there anyway and if it upsets you, it's a pretty good sign you're in the wrong forum.

I've been doing this since the time when most e-mail was delivered via UUCP, not SMTP, Usenet was actually relevant, and BBSes were the next "big thing". One thing that has never changed, no matter the technology or the date, has been the fact that there is and will always be a small percentage of people in public forums that will raise h*ll, have a God complex, or just simply be a*****s for the simple pleasure of it.
It's unavoidable, it's the inbuilt nature of a small segment of any community, and it always turns out that if moderators try to "moderate away" these folks the community is left in worse shape that it would have been if the "perpetrators" were simply ignored and marginalized...in all except the most dire and aggregious of circumstances.
People who have their feelings hurt easily will probably find themselves getting those feelings hurt in ANY online forum atmosphere given enough time. Those folks have to understand the above, deal with it, and just simply ignore the noise that bothers them. As long as the S/N ratio of the forum stays high, and from my short experience here it seems to, just leave well enough alone. Overmoderation has killed more forums than the rabblerousers ever have.

Common courtesy and polite social discourse used to be...well....common. Used to be, people didn't blithely hurl personal insults at folks they didn't know. But then again, most social interaction took place face to face, so possible consequences were very different.
Nowadays, any socially-******** boor with internet access can express every rancid little thought in their head without fear of reprisal, and the world is poorer for it.
Carry on........

I really can't talk about it. The study is for publication, hence it needs to remain confidential.

i would rather deal with some chance of hurt feelings and a democratic and free speech environment to express views no matter how un-popular harsh and boorish, rather then have some Mod decide that this is OK but that is NOT. i take no one on the net at face value and its just a bunch of mouse clicks and click key rubbish, but i do not like anyone deciding that this is wrong or impolite or off color according to some code of conduct, that allows just safe and plain watered down conversation with bunches of happy talk and "gee thats a nice bike!!" mho. this is the same thing my cycling club went through a few months back cause someone got bent because he got offended of some statment or another and the result has been people just leaving the club or fractionating away to other rides. or talking up bowling or stamps,,,,
its a slippy slope, but i think i would risk a offending comment.
milk and cookies after nap time? GOODY!!

Nope, I'm just under a binding confidentiality agreement, making.
Yes, Siu, I know exactly what the study is about.

I can definitely tell you it's not Milgram Redux. The IRB would never give the Milgram study an ethics clearance.

No worries.
OK, still working through the thread. Quite a few posts in here since this morning, and a lot of valid input. Thanks all. I need some time to process all of it though.
