Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Post your beater....

Ok so I have seen some amazing looking bikes that exceed my budget tremendously. I want to see what the forum has in terms of pieced together bikes that cost under $150 yet still perform. Post your pricing and sourcing of parts too. This should be fun to exchange ideas on future commuter/beater builds on the cheap.

by the way function over form in this one, it can be as tacky as you want... look at mine...

late 90's trek 1220 zx with full rsx group, TrSpeed stem, profile design aerobars, and CAT5 computer.....free on Craigslist
yellow and black marble handlebar tape.... $4.00
Alexrims ALX 270 rims and forte Pro DC tire takeoffs from my Scattante 560.... free
cassette spacers for 7 speed cassette on 9 speed hub... $200
ton of degreaser, rebuild shifters, 3 hours of cleaning and lubing..... $6.00

total cost

$12.00

Found in the basement of my wife's shared house.
Nashbar brakes, levers, and bars, ritchey pedals.
It came with a mix of Mavic, Shimano, and Campy.

Ugliest bar tape ever.

You want to hear something sad, I love that saddle and they don't make it anymore.
I've always been lucky that my butt is happiest on a cheap seat.

Man, if it weren't for the high quality picture resolution, I would think that this picture was straight out of 1986. How awesome is it that he mounts his '80's Nishiki to an era specific civic hatchback. Way to go!
