Treks

What was the last year Treks were made in the US? Was it 2004 or 2005?

I'm looking to buy a 2004 Trek 5000 for a very good price. I'm assuming these are slightly more valuable than newer, overseas bikes. Is there any truth in my assumption? Just wondering around how much this bike is worth.

My 2008 Madone must be mislabeled.

From what I understand the higher end madones are made in the US but I think the lower end bikes are made overseas.

miiikoh 09-26-08 12:52 PM

My bad, I guess I was misinformed.

Currently anything OCLV is made in Waterloo, WI. That include OCLV mountain bike and the 5 & 6 series Madones. When you go back a few years the higher end aluminum models were built in Waterloo as well.

Now, the 5000 has gone through a couple versions. it started as a Wisconsin built OCLV bike but eventually became a import frame and is labelled TCT carbon instead. It should pretty obviously state OCLV or TCT to let you know where it was built.

pharding 09-26-08 09:08 PM

My 2008 Madone was made in Wisconsin.

If it matters, my 2003 Trek 1000 was made in Taiwan.

It doesn't. None of this matters. Sometimes I wonder if people who want American frames have ever met an American factory worker.

I wonder why people that want a cheap Taiwanese bike Don't just get the Trek with the Giant label since they make the Treks. Why reward some lack of innovation clowns for relabeling bikes.

And What's a Factory? Actually there is a factory 1 mile from my house that employees over 3000 people.
http://www.howard-ind.com (Recently Raided by ICE in the biggest bust in US history.)

I've Known dozens that worked there and probably hundreds that worked there at one time or another without my knowledge. My father worked there. I also worked there. My grandfather also worked in a factory for over 30 years but hey this selling cellphones, burgers and insurance to each other seems to be a better method to base an economy.

I bought mine used because I needed a cheap bike for my commute. I didn't want to leave my Land Shark locked up outside all day.

As far as the country of origin, whatever, I was just letting the OP know that Trek had at least one bike made in Taiwan before 2004.

:)

I didn't know mine was made in the us until I took the chainstay rotector off for the first time the other day and see a big made in the US sticker.. he said they quit making them here in 05, just wanted to post some info as mine is a low end fuel.

Siu Blue Wind 09-27-08 12:33 AM

Mine is on the downtube, an American flag with the words under the clearcoat.

intence 09-27-08 01:38 AM

I believe all of the ZR9000 AL frames were US made. I have a 2007 2100ZR frame that's made in the USA. For 2008 Trek changed the naming to 2.1 and now the material is called Aluminum Black or Red or something (not ZR). The later ZR frames also used OCLV carbon seatstays FWIW.

gumhead 09-27-08 03:14 AM

My 2009 2.1 was mad in Taiwan

The sticker shouldn't be completely trusted... Somebody (sorry can't remember) has a link in their sig to a good article about this.

My Orbea says 'Made in Spain' but really it was only 'assembled' in Spain. The frame was made elsewhere.

slide13 09-27-08 08:06 AM

Yeah, sometimes stickers can be misleading. If it says "Handbuilt in the USA" on your Trek then the frame was actually made in Waterloo. If it says something else it could be made in Waterloo or just assembled there I believe. Not used anymore, but there were a few years where there were some confusing decals in this regard.

Just because it's made in the same factory, doesn't mean it is the same bike.
