Lost my handlebar plug - what do I do?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lost my handlebar plug - what do I do?

I lost that plug that goes into the dropbar to secure the end of the tape; don't know if all roadbikes have it, but I was wondering if those were easy to find at stores.

Thanks.

I lose them all the time. Bought a special gimicky one that screws in. No more lost plugs, and no need for corks.

If you race, make sure you get one before your next race. You can be disqualified by the USCF regulations for not having bar plugs.

I called Cateye. They sell plugs that wedge in with a screw. Very secure. Black are 90 cents each. Silver are $1.10 each. + shipping. 800-5-CatEye

Or you could use the cork from a bottle of wine.

sounds like time to get new handlebars to me. I know plugs don't come with bars but a new broom sweeps clean.

Forget the wine cork idea. Get yourself a nice high end single malt, glug that down and use THAT cork. If that's not an option, get some corked Belgian beer....especially if you're going to be riding cobbles.

This reminds me of the stupidest thing I ever did on a bike. About 10 years ago, I noticed that my handlebar plug was coming out. I was on a descent, traveling at about 35 to 40 mph. Without thinking, I pulled back my hand and slammed the heel of it into the plug, hoping to ram it back into the bar end. The otherwise predictable results were not, at the time, what I was expecting.

Actually, on a related note I did use a wine cork to plug mine; one side of my handlebars has been missing a plug for awhile and I wasn't sure what to do about it.
