Ultegra vs Specialized Hubs

Hey guys total noob here. Just started cycling as a means to get back into shape. Local guys and this Forum are getting me hooked. Been riding as much as my arse will let me. Starting to finally rack up miles.

My question is this: Once the upgrade bug sets in, should I consider swapping my specialized hubs that came with my Open Pros for Ultegra? I've noticed that lots of members recommend the OP/Ultegra combo. Or am I just splitting hairs at that point with marginal improvement?

I'm riding a Roubaix Comp Double and made the mistake of riding a buddies Roubaix S Works. Wow, what a difference. Now I'm sure the upgrade bug will bite soon!!!

Probably not going to enough of a difference to justify the money for new hubs/rebuild. I have Ultegra/Open pro combo, and I like my hubs alot....but still. Ive never ridden specialized hubs but they cannot be that bad. Are there different kinds of specialized hubs? Im suprised nobody has commented.

When the bug bites, spend wheel money on a "much faster" wheel set instead of a marginal upgrade, and keep your current set of rims for training/winter or whatever.

What kind of components are on your bike right now?

I agree with looking at replacing the whole wheelset and not just the hubs and a rebuild. I have upgraded bikes three times this season. (do not ask) I am now riding a Specialized Tarmac Expert and with each bike I have had much better wheel sets and I notice the difference there and I still do not have great wheels on my bike. I think they are good wheels but they can be alot better.

Oh and there will be no other upgrades as I love my bike now and cannot be on it enough.

Thanks for the reply heyguys. Thats the kind of info I was looking for. Wasn't sure if money was better spend on new hubs or wheelset. Looks like wheelset is the answer when the time is right.

My Roubaix Comp Double is pretty much all stock. I replaced the Avatar with a Toupe from the LBS when I purchased the bike. I just prefered the flex of the Toupe over the Avatar. Now that my sit bone is getting use to riding, I'm sure I made the right choice. I also bought some Look Keo Ti-Carbon pedals from a buddy who switched to speedplay. They were pretty cheap considering and I like 'em. The bike is all 105s which I'm told is fine for where I'm at now.

I'm planning on dropping some weight from the engine, currently 5'9 168lbs, then triming some weight off the bike, 20lbs. Thanks again for the reply!

Yes. The only improvement you'd get is from having a lighter wallet.

Thanks ericm979 and wickedshark, I appreciate the help!

Yup...nice upgrade with the pedals too...thats always the first and best thing to do (unless the seat is uncomfortable, which you have already taken care of). 105 stuff is definitely better than a "good" start...you should be good for a while.

Grats on your bike....Specialized bikes are great.
