Can I mix drivetrain components as I want to ?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can I mix drivetrain components as I want to ?

I've a Cannondale CAAD 9 with full Shimano 105 with the exception of the cassette which is Ultegra.

When I reach the point where I need to replace the chain/cassette will I then be able to use a Dura-Ace chain/cassette ? Also, will I be able to use DA shifters with the rest being 105 and will I feel an improvement when the rest is 105 ?

Regards,
Jakob Laursen

yes.. you can mix and match.. you can pretty much use any shimano derailleur with any shifter. In fact, I'm using the first generation 105 (6speed) rear derailleur with a 9 speed dura aces bar end shifter and SRAM 9speed cassette. It all works fine. ONly thing is when you change your parts, the shifter needs to be the same as the cassette and chain.... meaning.. all 9speed or all 10speed, etc..

I'm sure someone will comment more eloquently.. i just got back from a ride and my head is spinning.

Yup, the new Dura-Ace is NOT backwards compatible.

To the OP, yes you can do it, you can also use SRAM parts with Shimano (i.e. cassettes).

Only to a point. SRAM casstes are not compatible with some 10sp hubs and the RDs are not compatible although the FDs are.

No point in getting a DA cassette though, even some pro teams use Ultegra. They last longer.
