Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any BFers have real world experience with Williams wheels?

Their products look good on their website, the reviews are good. Does anybody here actually have Williams wheels? I'd really like to try a pair on my next road bike.

Not yet, but I am gonna be buying a set or two. The company is local and the wheels are very popular around here. I know Pizzaman is riding a set and has mentioned he likes em. Great value, great customer service. They also provide nuetral wheel support at alot of our races.

How many miles? And have you had to true them at all?

Almost 3k miles on my system 30s and I've been very pleased. Durable so far, no need to true them yet even though some of the roads I ride on are quite poor. I think they're a more well rounded wheel than the Ksyrium SL3s I use to own, and so far just as druable. One thing that I wasn't excited about was that they came in 80 grams over the claimed weight - which is pushing what I think is reasonable. Also, as others have stated before, the customer service is top notch. One of my rims showed up with a nick in it and they sent a new wheel out to me the same day I called in. Bottom line, I'd buy them again and if I needed another set of wheels I'd look to them first.

I have about 3k on my 30x's. I am 210lbs and they do not flex. I've hit some REALLY nasty holes and swore they would be out of true but nope! They role very nice as well. Recommended by me.

Some of the cheaper, i.e. System30's, wheelsets look really nice for the price(as do the carbon wheels, but why would I look at those?). I don't have them, but I've seen a person or two around Bloomington riding them, and Bloomington has some *******izing hills and holes.

I have a set of 50c wheels (carbon clinchers) and they have been bulletproof. I've had them touched up once, but they really didn't need it. I ridden them 1500 miles or so and all of it has been either racing or the HARD rides in town. They are lighter than advertised (1550 observed), stiff and roll like a freight train. They also don't have that 'heavy' feeling at low speeds like Zipp or Mavic Carbones have. With Vittoria OC CX tires and latex tubes, they ride like tubies. The hubs are smoooooooth. I had an 'incident' with the front wheel and was forced to replace the hub with a White Industries, but it was my fault, not the fault of the wheel. Front spokes don't like rear derailleurs on other bikes...it tore up the hub flange, but did nothing to the carbon rim.

Keith Williams is a first class guy and gives outstanding customer service. Want my example?
When I first got the wheels, I went ahead and installed a cassette, tubes and tires. When I went to air up the rear wheel, I heard a pop. I didn't think anything about it...maybe just the bead seating itself. When I put the wheel in the bike and spun it, I noticed a deformation in the bead/brake track. I pulled the tire off and there was a huge crack in the carbon. It was a manufacturing defect...sh*t happens. It was Friday night @ 9:00 (6:00 pst). I called Williams in the hopes that someone might be hanging around...no luck.
I left a voicemail and expected a call the following week.
@ 9:25 (6:25 pst), Keith Williams called me and apologized profusely. He then said he would send me another wheel via Fedex on Monday...on his dime AND pay for the return freight for the bad wheel. I got the new wheel on the Wednesday. He sent the new wheel out BEFORE getting the old one back!!!! Would Zipp OR HED do that?
I've talked to him @ 10 times since and he's just talked to me like we've known each other for years.

I'd buy another set of wheels from Williams TONIGHT!!!! They produce solid wheels that are a very solid value!

PCad, you just are standing on the precipice of losing a whole lot of bike snob points. How can you expect to be the fastest dude in the group if you're not riding the most expensive wheels?

Seriously, what is up with you all the sudden? I feel like I don't even know you anymore. Not that I ever really did, except in that strange internet way, but you know what I mean, right?

Thanks d. Those will be the training hoops on the Cervelo S2. I like the carbon rims so I don't have to swap out CF and rubber brake pads when I switch to the Zipp 404s. I like it. Had my eye on Williams for a while.

Snob appeal? What are you all bike dweeb nerds? Rhetorical question, of course you are.

There's no snob appeal with bike crap. It's bike crap. The only people it will impress are bike dorks. Why would I care about impressing those idiots? I like bike crap that works. Williams stuff looks like it works. We'll find out.

Have a pair of 30x on my newest bike. Only minus is that they came in heavier than advertised. Other than that they perform well, have been bombproof so far: 500+ miles, no problems, and considering that there is fairly major construction going on most of my routes, and especially the road I take to get away from home, that's saying something. Hit some roadwork hard enough yesterday to pop my innertube, wheel is fine.

Customer service is great, they shipped my wheels within an hour or two of placing my order, got them a day or two later.

They're definitely going to be the first major upgrade I do. 30x's for sure. Of course, I get an extra bonus of having "Williams" on my bike considering it's my last name. Cool to me at least.

I have a set of 19s and a set of 30s. The hybrid ceramic bearings in the Chosen hubs used by Williams are extremely smooth and do spin very efficiently. The best part is the muted freewheel noise (not loud like Ritchey or pre-2004 Zipp). I have about 1K on the 19s and 2K on the 30s. Both are solid and only required to be trued once since June 2008 (I weigh mid-160). Braking surface is consistent though they are not laser welded. Also, no wear indicator on the breaking surface.

WW info:
19s came in about 2.5% above the advertised weight
30s came in about 5% above the advertised weight.

I got the 19's a couple of months ago.

They are light! Lightest I've ever used. I am 172-175 lbs, riding on these nasty Brooklyn streets and can attest to their stiffness. I love them!

I can also attest to Keith Williams being a stand up guy who accepts complete accountability for his products! Any issue at all you may have, any question, he is there to answer, and quickly.

When I go with carbon wheels he is going to be the guy I go to.
