Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

umd, in answer to your question, I don't think it's got any stupider around here. It's seasonal.

As someone who doesn't get too much in the way of seasons, here is how I use bf to figure out which month it is:

October - November: "What winter clothing should I buy?" / "Trainer vs. Roller" - Up beat, I will ride all winter Threads

December - "Look at the bike swag I got for Christmas" / "Good will to all men" - Happy festive threads

January - "I put on 15lbs but it's ok I'm working on a winter groupbuy build" / "Should have got rollers" / "It's still sunny on the West Coast" / "HTFU and ride in the snow" / "Annual mileage pi$$ing contest"- Sane threads

February - "If I have to ride one more hour on my trainer I'm going to kill myself!" / "Weight is not shifting" - Desperate threads

March - "There is a light at the end of the tunnel, I saw a daffodil" - Optimistic threads

April - "Where the %$#% is summer!!" / "Hope the rain stops" - Desperation threads

May - "Riding again, feeling slow, clearly need to upgrade last years upgrades" - It's great to be alive threads

June - "Got my new uber bike with full Sramnigonlo-achee, don't know how I ever survived with out it" / "Help me justify the $3k I've just spent" / "Riding my first century / Crit" - Happy threads

July/ August - "All pros are dopers" / "Hi, I'm a n00B, which bike should I get for $XXX?" / "How's my fit?" / "Which saddle/shorts/sunglasses/gel/shorts/socks/seatbag??" - Love riding but I could be more comfortable threads

September - "Love this riding" / "Can I clean my bike with sulphuric acid?" / "How do you fold your bike shorts" / "I've owned a bike for 3 weeks and ridden 145 miles so I know everything about everything" threads- Time of real angst between n00bs and old timers.

Stupidity peaks in September but real riders are riding so don't notice as they are too busy riding. Winter is where the really flaming and grammar nazis come out.

Roll on next May!

If you call (p)uke on some of the stoopid stuff he writes, trying to pass himself off as some kind of expert when he's got all of a few months of cycling experience - mostly on the sidewalk, you get put on his ignore list. I consider it an honor to share a place on the list with you.

The best forum in BF would be the on that only allows members who are on (p)uke's ignore list!

I've seen too many replies to posts with flip answers or plain disdain. Yes, road cyclists can be a very competitive lot, but that does not mean that we have to treat others as if they are either "dumb" or "stupid". Also it seems to me that certain posters have achieved a "god like status" in this forum. I see these individuals really not contributing to the sport, but becoming victims of their own egos.

Lets face some facts, this forum is made available through the use of advertising, which pays for the bandwidth. Advertising only succeeds when more people look at the forum. If this particular forum looses readers/members, it becomes no longer relative to the advertisers that count on more vistors to sell their products.

Perhaps we need to re focus energies, to making this a place where all are welcome, not just a playground for over inflated egos, that in the long run really don't matter. They need to post their opinions elsewhere on another board, or direct readers to a personal blog. This to me seems more appropriate.
Betcha if we go back at least to when I joined BF (and probably farther), we could find tons of posts identical to this one. Things have not really changed that much other than that we have more members and it's human nature to think of the past as the 'good ole days' when everyone took warm showers and sang Kumbuya together.

What topics would you consider as the type of thread that actually improved the Road Cycling Forum? How long would it take to exhaust your list of topics? Sooner or later, you become bored, work slows down, your teenager pisses you off and you just have to take that level of frustration, angst, boredom and do something fun.

I miss the days of discussion of the OCP, the Knave, and the hijinks. It is fun to poke fun with each other. What do you talk about when you ride? How do you treat your riding friends?

I was right there with you until the warm showers and singing part. That's when it got sort of creepy.

umd - I'm going to go fourth wall here and say thank you for creating an entertaining thread. If only threads like this could earn you (the thread starter) money for every response. It's the equivalent of having a hot dog stand at a ball park, or a donut shop next to a police station in terms of guaranteed customer traffic.

But to answer your question, if that's what you really want , I think you may be experiencing a little high school senior year syndrome. It's where you go from loving your friends to anticipating graduation so you won't have to look at those same faces anymore. With your shoulder injury and unable to ride these past few, it's like you're stuck back in high school. Which, I would argue, is the humor equivalency around here, and not 6th grade as someone suggested a page ago.

I remember back before I was on (p)uke's ignore list. Life was such drudgery. Sitting at home by myself all the time - the phone would never ring. Nobody would ride with me. Even the Freds would tease me unmercifully. It was terrible.

Now I'm on the list - and everything has changed. My phone rings off the hook. People I have never met before call me up to see if I will go ride with them. I have women following me home from the MUP's. I even have a threesome scheduled for later tonight at my new girlfriend's house. And I owe it all to being on (p)uke's list!

Thanks (p)uke!!
