Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Really Weird Rattling Noise

Looking for any advice/opinions on what might be causing the noise coming from my bike. I was out doing 80 miles last Sunday and during the middle of the ride, I noticed that the bike was making some rattling noises. I thought it was just my headset compression had loosened up a little and i needed to tighten it back up but that wasn't it. I kept riding and trying to diagnose the problem and found out that it would only rattle when I stopped pedaling and had my right foot down. If I had my left foot down, the rattling would stop. If I was pedaling, it would rattle some, but pretty much only during the time in my pedal stroke that my right foot was near the bottom of the stroke. It didn't seem to matter if I shifted my weight on the pedals.

Anyway, it's not a very bad rattle but it's incredibly annoying. Anybody have any ideas what might be causing it?

Can you make them rattle by shaking them in your hand?

I could with my look keos on my sidis. Drove my crazy one day when I couldn't find the rattle on my bike.

Hmmm, I'll try it out. I'm at work right now but I'll test that theory when I get home later today.

I've ridden Look cleats for years and have come to believe that they have a chronic bolt loosening problem. It could be a loose bolt that's giving the rectangular washer some room to bounce around.

I epoxied mine to quiet down the rattle.

You've checked your bottle cages and fenders?

Checked the cleats, and bottle cages and a bunch of other stuff and can't figure this out. I think it's gonna be a mystery for a while...probably until something falls off.

Check if the little retainer on the valve stem is loose and sits and rattles against the rim.

Nope, valve stem retainers are both tight. The only clue is still the fact that it pretty much only rattles when I coast with my right foot down/left foot up.
