Cheap Winter Beater Bike - Suggestions?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cheap Winter Beater Bike - Suggestions?

I am looking for a really cheap bike I can ride to death this winter. I'm looking sub $200. Do you have any suggestions I can look for on ebay or craigslist. I'm thinking something like an old raleigh record that I could get really cheap and work on myself as needed.

Any suggestions for other models that tend to go really cheap on ebay or craigslist? Thanks.

P.S. I have a trainer, but I hate riding inside, and I really don't want to take my Tarmac out in the snow and ice and salt.

Find an old school bike frame that can fit cross tires on it, and convert it to a single speed so you don't have to worry much about the drive train.

Hit the yard sales (early) and thrift stores to find a nice old beater. Usually all they need is new tires, a new chain and some lube. Here's a Raleigh Record I found for $10 with a totally rusted chain. I cleaned it up, added a little touch up paint, a new chain and lubed all four main bearing surfaces.

Since this pic was taken I've added new tires and a rear light for night riding. I'll soon be upgrading from this bike to an 83 Trek 400 with aero brakes, also found at a yard sale.

+1 on a single speed cross bike. If you invest a little bit more on it you can use it as a grocery getter and pub bike during the rest of the year. check out the Surly crosscheck frame or the IRO rob roy
