Because they have a spring centered float which will directly cause knee agravation to many users, and especially many new users who, through lack of experience, have a greater chance of setting their cleats incorrectly.

Overall an extremely poor recommendation.

...this from a reformed Time lover. Their decision to go spring-centered made me cry.

In other areas I see folks go on and on about how great their Speedplay Zeros are. How do they compare to the previous mentioned pedals here? (for someone new to clipless)

+1 and +1 and I recommend specialized by footwear

+1 for Time RSX.

See my previous posts regarding why.

Just wondering: what would you all recommend for a mountain biker coming off Eggbeaters?

Eggbeaters and a three hole adapter plate.

I believe the Nashbar pedals referenced above are identical to the performance "forte" ones, which is what I use...they are knockoffs of the classic look pedal, and IMHO offer the best bang for the buck.

But the good news is that the clipless pedal market has matured so you will probably do well with any of the excellent suggestions already made. This was not true in the "good old days" when the technology was new and the quality variable.

Don't mess around with second hand pedals for your first set. You NEED a set of cleats as well as the pedals and you want the cleats to be new. Start with something like this but not necessarily this item. http://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-SPD-SL-R...QQcmdZViewItem Make sure that they state that a set of new cleats is included.

When it comes to cycling shoes my strong recommendation is that you NEED to try them on first. Cycling shoes are a tight fit which you need to be just right and they are not often sized the same as for street shoes. Try before you buy. Having said that I recommend that the entry level Shimano shoes are very good and all you need to start with.
