Just wondering: what would you all recommend for a mountain biker coming off Eggbeaters?

I believe the Nashbar pedals referenced above are identical to the performance "forte" ones, which is what I use...they are knockoffs of the classic look pedal, and IMHO offer the best bang for the buck.
But the good news is that the clipless pedal market has matured so you will probably do well with any of the excellent suggestions already made. This was not true in the "good old days" when the technology was new and the quality variable. |
this is very hard... hahahaha

Don't mess around with second hand pedals for your first set. You NEED a set of cleats as well as the pedals and you want the cleats to be new. Start with something like this but not necessarily this item. http://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-SPD-SL-R...QQcmdZViewItem Make sure that they state that a set of new cleats is included. When it comes to cycling shoes my strong recommendation is that you NEED to try them on first. Cycling shoes are a tight fit which you need to be just right and they are not often sized the same as for street shoes. Try before you buy. Having said that I recommend that the entry level Shimano shoes are very good and all you need to start with. Anthony |
