Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SRAM Force crankset opinions

opinions from actual users. I have a 170mm FSA K-Force now (with Rival) that I'm pretty happy with, although front shifting could be a tad better. I'm getting a new SRAM Force group soon and had planned to get a Red crankset because I wanted to try 165mm length. Now that I've decided not to go 165mm I'm wondering if the SRAM Force will be a step up, down or sideways from the K-Force. If it's better I'll give it a shot; if not I'll keep the K-Force and sell it. I'm going to sell it I'd rather sell it as new and not install it at all.

Selling a Rival package for Force seems like a strange enough move. I don't think the K-Force is much different from the Force. I'm sure there are differences, but in actual functionality, it's gotta be close. FWIW, I'm running SRAM Force and like it, but I think you're splitting hairs.

The Force crankset is awesome--great shifting, nice and stiff, smooth bearings.

Any SRAM, Campy, or Shimano crankset is a shifting upgrade from FSA IMHO. I've had the Gossamer and SL-K, and they were a definite step down shifting-wise from the big 3.

09 Force = front derailleur with Zero-Loss, Reach adjustment, longer levers, wider paddle, choice of shifter cable routing direction, blingy carbon levers, weight savings and possible shifting improvements from using a crank designed to go with the FD/brifers.

07 Rival = none of the above...and before you respond I don't like the black finish of 09 Rival.

I had the Gossamer crankset and upgraded within a few months. I really didn't like that one.

+1 Mostly

The SRAM bottom bracket kind of sucks. Mine havent had a very long life span and Ive been riding SRAM longer than most people on the forum. I upgraded to the Red bottom bracket tho and that solved the problem. I'd say tho that the Force crank shifts every bit as good as my Record crank.

Is it external bearing? Can I use the Force crank with the FSA BB?

Someone else is going to have to say for sure on this. I would say so but I was think that FSA BB has slight different measurements than Sram/ Shimano.

Sram has it's own BB basically that it shares with only Truvativ from that I understand.

I have the Red crankset fwiw with a Force front derailleur and they seem to work just fine together. I've heard only good things about the Force crankset though too. I really doubt you'll go wrong either way. Unless you're a competative sprinter I think you'll be fine with what ever you think looks the best!
