how do you wash your cycling caps?

I was wondering because I washed mine along with all the other clothes in the washing machine and when it was done, the cardboard material from the cap was bent, inverted. What to do?

Surferbruce 10-21-08 01:58 AM

I only own one, so I wash it every 2 or 3 rides, or when it's extra manky. My visor must be plastic because it is still OK.

Before you chuck your hat in the washing machine, you should be able to tell if it is plastic or cardboard. If you bend the visor in the middle, I'd expect cardboard to remain creased, and plastic to spring back close to original shape.

Just dont put it in the dryer

Prodigy4299 10-21-08 09:42 AM

I was mine by hand in the sink using detergent. DO NOT let it soak for long, though (at least that's what the instructions on them say). Then hang to dry and you're good to go!

Hocam 10-21-08 09:51 AM

Just bend the cardboard back, I've washed mine about 50 times now and no problemos.

Starting to think about getting a wool cap for winter...

UtahWasatch 10-21-08 09:52 AM

I put mine on the top rack of the dish washer. Probably about 20+ washes of my newest hat and is still in great shape! To dry it after wash I just hang on a tree limb outside.

bdcheung 10-21-08 09:55 AM

throw it in the laundry machine with everything else.

tfg111 10-21-08 10:02 AM

What is a cycling cap for? Do you where it under you helmet?

Yep, under your helmet.
Good to keep sun out of eyes and retain some heat now that its getting cooler.

bdcheung 10-21-08 10:05 AM

Also good to keep rain from falling on your face.

Chicks dig it.

Although, it seems to only attract hipsters, but I'll take what I can get.

Namenda 10-21-08 10:12 AM

Hand wash in the sink, while cleaning the innards from my helmet at the same time.

Prodigy4299 10-21-08 10:14 AM

In the summer they soak up your sweat (much easier to wash than helmet pads) and in the winter, they keep you cozy. :)

I just ear the cap, no helmet. You can flip the peak up if it gets darker and you need more light. They're also handy at night, as you can flip it down whenever a car approaches, and save being blinded when they don't dip their lights. You can also wear them backwards which makes them more aero in a time trial...

cparekh 10-21-08 10:30 AM

Just bend it back. I wash mine in the washing machine.

ckelly49 10-21-08 10:33 AM

I take mine in the shower with me after a ride.
