How to: Mount Tubulars? ASAP HELP
Hey guys,
I just got a new pair of carbon tires, HED Jets to be exact, and I have no clue about how to mount the tubular onto the wheel.... PLEASE HELP ASAP

should probably take it to a shop that does know how but ask them to show you how it is done.

First, put the tires on without glue, pump them up to 120 psi. Leave them on for a day or 2 This will stretch them and give you time to read up on the gluing fun to come.

Yes, but don't ride them! You're only doing this to pre-stretch the tires so they will be easier to mount onto the rim later.

+1 on getting someone to help you the first time and learning. This is something you do not want to F up.
One little tip, make sure the braking surfaces are free of glue after you glue them and before you ride.
Otherwise, it's virtually impossible to modulate the brakes when you head out of the house straight with your new wheels down a 40mph descent, braking late into a hairpin turn.

I taped my braking surfaces with painter's tape before gluing my first set of tubulars. Really helped.

Do yourself a favor and pay someone to do it for you, if this is your level of knowledge regarding tubulars.
Particularly if you plan on riding near others any time soon.
Really.
This is a 3-day process, by the way, so "ASAP" isn't going to do you much good if you have a race coming up tomorrow.

Yes...they will stay on.Pretty much the air pressure will constrict the tire and make it "hug" (for lack of a better word right now) the rim pretty well. Just don't ride on them like this!!! This procedure is to nicely stretch the tires. Do what I did...find a couple of old cheap tubular rims and keep them just for stretching tires.
And really, Google is your friend. Typing "gluing tubular tires" in the nice little Google search box yielded a ton of results in the blink of an eye.

I don't know about that. I hated glue so I used the tape and it didn't really work that well for me. Now I'm (somewhat) happy to be back using glue. A couple of my teammates have experienced mixed results with the tape. But the ones that have had good results with them have used Tufo tires. My experience was using Conti Sprinters with the tape and some of my friends used Vittoria CRs and Corsa Evo CXs with the tape. None of the non-tufo-tired ones liked their results.

In terms of tufo extreme tape - what are the best racing tires that won't get f'ed by the tape? I guess Vittorias are out.

Clincher rims (or whole wheels) work just fine for tubular tire stretching. The tires fit on there fine, the valve fits through the valve whole just fine, you can press them up to 160 psi just fine, and they're a lot easier to find.

I've used Conti's on my Zipps with Tape and never had a problem. I live in the mountains of NC and go down alot of hard descents... again... no rolling. But maybe I've just been lucky. I also ride with a couple guys who use the tape... same thing... no problems.
